5Sturdy and easy on the eye
By Robert L. Gallo
I have a middling projector - the Epson 6500UB - and was looking for a screen that would give a reasonably good image, was sturdy and was sized for my application. I've seen fixed screens at shows going for 10, 20 and 30 times as much money. They surely have an edge in imaging quality, but nowhere near 10, 20 to 30 times better. I am quite content with the result; some friends feel like dumping their big plasma tvs after seeing this. I spent the small extra amount to get the "C" model, which seems to have heavier duty bushings - the roller internals. For such a modestly priced screen I think this makes sense. I could have gone with the motorized mount, but wanted to minimize the possible points of failure - transporting and shipping such a beast is out of the question. Besides, how hard is it to pull a screen down! One minor point. I'm an exacting audiophile, sensitive to all manner of noises and vibrations. The metal work produces a slight (VERY slight, mind you) vibration - only when the screen was up, not in use - and I have it suspended from my speakers in my super-duper stereo setup. This bugged me, but it was easily solved by inserting a small piece of rubbery damping material between the bottom rod and the opening of the case. Again, this is only needed when not using the screen for viewing. Regular people would surely not notice it. I'm not sure how the roller mechanism and braking dog will last, but my father bought a small, tripod screen ("Brilliant" brand) for 8mm movies in 1951, which I used occasionally while waiting for the screen. It's still working smoothly 58 years later. I'm confident.
