Da-Liteful (hahahahahahaha!)

First, some numbers: The screen hangs about three inches down from a 9.5-foot ceiling. The projector, an InFocus IN114, sits 11.5 feet away on a shelf, and I, an OutOfFocus OF411, sit 9 feet away on a couch. The projector throws an image that's about as wide as the screen, 7 feet, at an aspect ratio of 4:3 (for television), making for a diagonal of ... [scribble scribble scribble carry the 1 scribble Wolfram Alpha scribble] ... a diagonal of about 8.75 feet. That's almost 9 feet. I sit as far from the screen as the image is large, and I LOVE IT! Back when I was young and televisions were boxy, I maintained a similar ratio, sitting as far from the screen as the television was large. And when I was younger still and televisions had yet to be invented, I sat closer still to the puppets. But let me share a secret with you: ratios are meaningless; puppets smell; scale is everything. Nine feet away from a 9-foot screen is a revelation.Next, the screen: It is my non-expert opinion that this screen is of high quality--flat, reflective, and visible at all the angles I wish to be watching from. Da-Lite offers a variety of screen surfaces (Matte White, Video Spectra 1.5, Silver Lite 2.5, High Power, etc) whose technical specifications seemed irrelevant to my watching habits; check out Da-Lite's website to see if you're more discriminating than I was. The screen is square but the image (at either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio) is not, so there's a strip of screen above the image with nothing projected on it. Indeed, that was a preferable setup for me because of the high ceiling; this way, I don't have to strain my neck looking up at the looming moving pictures. The screen's casing is a pleasant shade of eggshell, and so it blends nicely with our blanched almond ceiling and light smoke walls. I have compared this screen to fancier ones at fancier friends' castles, and while their $2000-screen is better than my $200-screen, it is not ten times better, not by a long shot; it is at most 1.78 times better.And installation: Because I wanted the screen offset from the wall, I opted to hang it from the ceiling (eye bolts screwed into the nearest joists, then S-hooks to account for the fact that the joists were inconsiderately spaced a few inches wider apart than the screen casing's hooks) instead of using wall brackets. Besides, bolts and hooks are way cheaper than brackets. If you've never taken drill to drywall before, you might want to do a bit of research before you hang the screen yourself, or even ask your creepy but well-intentioned handy neighbor for help and maybe, just maybe, you'll find out he's not as creepy as you initially thought, and that the incident with the bathroom window was an innocent misunderstanding.And finally, CSR: That's "Controlled Screen Return," the best bang for your screen retraction buck. Just tug the extended screen to unlock it, and watch it gently, gently roll back into its casing. A veritable mechanical engineering wonder! You could pay about $100 for the spring-loaded retraction version, the kind that retracts the way a tape measure would; but I didn't want that kind of jolt on my joists and eye bolts and S-hooks, nor did I want to be bothered with tugging on the cord to make sure the screen retracts at the right speed. Double that price for a CSR option, and more than double it again for an electric motor option. Trust me, though (and why wouldn't you? I'm a complete stranger) CSR is the way to go.In the meantime, may I interest you in popcorn & a movie at my house? And sorry about that bathroom window thing earlier. I can explain.
