5Simple, easy to use and hook up, and delivers the goods
By Larry VanDeSande
Sony hit a home run with this, the best SACD player on the market for the average guy making the switch to super audio. When I changed from stereo to SACD I first bought one of those player that does both SACD and DVD. Nyet!I don't care much about DVD and music is a large part of my life. I have collected classical recordings for 35 years and wanted to hear what those hybrid SACDs had to offer in SACD. My first experience was a nightmare; then I bought this machine.Today I've listened to the Bach "St. Matthew Passion" highlights, Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique" and, now, Bach's "Two and Three Part Inventions" by Glenn Gould. Each of these SACDs delivers something a little different -- the Bach was made last year and is true surround sound; the Berlioz was recorded in 1959 and is three channel without surround sound; the Bach, recorded in 1964, is SACD in stereo only. But each of these recordings, when played on this machine, sounds like they were made yesterday. This machine is easy to set up, easy to use, delivers great sound and has five disk trays so you can load it and play it all day long. This is an excellent machine for people that want to hear SACD disks and doesn't cost much at most places. You'll like it and you'll really like the sound it produces for you.

5Sony SCD-CE595 exceeds expectations
By Rick Wirch
I bought a Toshiba SD-6915 multi-format 5 disc changer because it did SACD, DVD Audio, and CD. It was terrible and I returned it. It has the worst user-interface and ergonomics on the planet, and I noticed several bugs in the 2 days I owned it. So after returning the item, I decided to exchange it for the Sony 595 SACD/CD player. Wow! the audio quality was amazing over my previous CD player. My wife said immediately when listening to CD's its like we had a new stereo and she could understand the lyrics in some songs that she couldn't before. My stereo is a very good audiophile type setup, so I was surprised that the CD player was my weak link. I have Magnepan planar magenetic speakers, an Adcom 120W amp, and a Denon preamp. Previously, I had a Denon 5 CD changer that was about $400 in 1995. I also listened to the 2 or 3 SACD's that I have and they also sound wonderful, but I am amazed at how everything sounds so much better with this unit. I was also very happy that the SACD player lets you specify whether each of the 5.1 channels is present and a large/small speaker. It also lets you adjust the balance which is nice so that I can not send audio to my center channel which is a fairly lo-fi speaker. The Sony SACD also has reasonable ergonomics and lets you select shuffle, straight play from a button on the front. Basically, it has all the buttons you need for the player on the front so you don't need to find the remote to use the player. I am very satisfied with this player and it is too bad that nobody makes a player that works this well and does DVD audio as well.

4Pretty good player at a great price
By A photographer
I was upgrading some of my stereo equipment a few weeks ago and bought this Sony CD changer for the SACD capability. Let me first say that I do not have multi-channel capacity. To put it simply, I don't want a bunch of speakers with their wiring running all over the room and I'm pretty happy with 2-channel stereo. I listen to a pretty wide range of music, from country to classical and I have a fairly good stereo system. In addition to my main outfit, I've been using a Sony receiver and CD player at the back of the house to play music in the backyard through some outdoor Polk speakers. The Sony equipment was originally purchased in 1985 and has served well. I had no qualms about buying another Sony CD player.SACD's and CD's on the SCD-CE595 sound a little bright compared to CD's played on my main CD player made by Rotel. Not harsh, but there is a tendency toward the treble. This probably can also be accounted for by the B&W speakers I use and their amazing clarity in the upper and mid-range. Anyway, a simple counterclockwise turn of the treble control on the amp cleared this up immediately. Julia Fischer's Russian Violin Concertos SACD was on the edge of harshness until I decreased the treble slightly. To my non-golden ear, there's not a lot of difference between 2-channel SACD and regular CD. The SACD has a little more air around the music with a little more depth to the soundstage but, honestly, a well-recorded standard CD will give an SACD a run for the money. I have Claire Martin's two most recent Linn recordings on SACD and I must confess that there's little difference in sound when played on the Rotel compared to the Sony or, in fact, comparing them to her older recording on regular CD.I don't have any complaints about the remote control. It works very well within its limitations. The only problem I encountered with this player is that it is too deep to fit on the shelves inside my stereo cabinet. It's not insurmountable--I just set it on top and put the lamp on top of it.Last night, I had the displeasure to discover my 20-year old Sony CD player I use for outside listening was refusing to accept any discs. It has finally died. RIP. Today, I'm ordering another of the SCD-CE595's to replace it.If I like it well enough to buy another, why not 5 stars? The bright sound is one reason--it could sound a little smoother and 2-channel SACD's could be a little more open. Also, I doubt today's Sony hi-fi equipment is as well-built as the stuff I bought 20 years ago. Today's consumer electronics are of reasonable quality but disposable. I doubt I'll get 20 years out of the SCD-CE595.It is now May 2006. I've been living with these two disc players for long enough to revise my previous estimation. Considering the price, this is a five-star SACD player.Over time, the sound has improved. A lot. What was originally overly bright has settled down. The sound is now more open and revealing--the detail of SACD's is amazing. The player needs to be broken in. Buy one, play it a lot and give it some time. Patience brings great rewards.UPDATE 03/2013: I've owned two of these Sony SACD changers since 2005, played music on them frequently and they continue to function perfectly and continue to provide hours of enjoyment. Sadly, this changer has been discontinued and Sony lists a single SACD changer on their website (at $1500.00!). Generally, SACD players are few and far between these days and very expensive when available. It appears the SACD concept has faded away as more people get their music from downloads. That is also sad but not unexpected.

5simple enough for me to use
By Jaymer
unsure why the tech nerd had problems with the manual.i followed it to setup all my speakers (6.1 config).i used it to reassign a digital input.i started programming my remote within 1 minute... just like the manual said. i tought it the codes for my Scientific Atlanta HD recorder and the DISH box, and it already knew about my Philips DVD player. Now its the only remote i have to use.i'm into HDTV, so the component switching was neccessary for me to accomodate several HD inputs - works fine, PLUS it upconverts my older DISH Network receiver's s-video output and goes out the component plug just fine - just 1 year ago receivers wouldn't do this and this was a shock for me - svideo has never looked so good on my tv.there is one problem though with the optical input jacks - sony started using a type with a little flap door - and if you use a cheaper optical cable, it can hang when inserted, so when you yank it out, it tears the door off and makes that optical input unusable. I bet Sony will learn and soon abandon this type of connector, but for now, be careful if you plug in a cable and it won't come back out easily... if this happens, you may just want to leave it in there.

4Documentation/Remote Flaws
By Dennis
Great receiver, features sound and looks. Price/Performance can't be beat. However, this is a complicated piece of electronics and the supplied manual doesn't do it justice. Receiver setup (if you wish to depart from the default) requires tedious trial and error when good documentation would have stepped you through it. Basics like defining the function of each control on the face of the receiver are missing. I've spent a few hours trying to program the remote -- with out success. It's frustrating to have a great machine with rediculously inadequate documentation.

5Packed with Features and Great Sound
By Mike D.
I'll admit that I'm a bit of a newcomer when it comes to home theater. But I am a musician and a former professional audio engineer, so I think I have a fairly well-tuned pair of ears. This unit is loaded with handy features, like acting as a switchbox for video sources, with numerous switching options, a wide variety of input and output connections, and a means of labeling your tuner presets. Some of the bells and whistles are really unnecessary, but it's easy to disregard the ones you don't want to use.The 7.1 surround sounds great if you have any media encoded with it. There's very little out there right now, but the Star Wars trilogy DVDs are encoded with "Dolby Digital 5.1 EX," which is essentially 7.1, and they sound fantastic. 5.1 source material (both Dolby Digital and DTS) sounds great, too. You can use Pro Logic II to simulate a 7.1 soundtrack, but it really doesn't do much other than spreading the sound out a little, which is a nice effect, although subtle. The unit reproduces other digital sources very well also, such as CDs and the coaxial feed from my digital cable box. Analog sources are reproduced effectively and adequately (including my turntable), although they seem dull in comparison to the digital sources. But that's probably not the fault of the unit so much as it is the source material.A word of caution: make sure you take the time to set up the unit and your speakers properly. It took me a week or two of trying different settings and different speaker placements before I finally got it all sounding the way I wanted it.Overall, I'd say that this is a pretty darn good receiver for its price range. If you're looking for something good and versatile in a mid-level range, you could do a lot worse.

5The best
By CKem
Maptech's Terrain Navigator Pro has got to be the best of it's type. It's on the upper end of recreational map software, and on the bottom end of mapping software. I used it for four years in a cooperative project with the USFS and the data collected was easily transferred to the program and it was easy to import from the "cheap" TNP program to the USFS ESRI program.I am not familiar with other makes of newer similar software (Nat'l Geographic, Garmin, etc.), but from what I have seen in the past, TNP is way ahead of them.

4Great Case... minor limitations...
By A. Wilbur
I really like this case. The only real downside is that it is limited as far as cooling is concerned. In SO MANY other ways it is almost limitless, especially when compared to other cube cases. This is the ONLY CASE of this type that you can completely customize yourself! That has to count for something! Anyhow, customizability comes at a cost. The way standard mATX motherboards are designed causes the cooling problem. The CPU sits partially under the PSU (an unheard of full 300w one). This could be fixed with a custom motherboard for the case, but then the whole customizability bonus is out the window and you have a pre-built shuttle box.

You can fit pretty freakin' large heatsink in this baby. I am using a Thermalright AX7 which measures 80mm tall including the 25mm tall fan... its on the large side. The fan just touches the PSU on the side. I am able to remove it and reinstall without taking the motherboard out of the case btw. Many other quality heatsinks can fit in here and still have a good 10mm clearance with a full 25mm tall fan.

The case could cool a little better with some type of an intake fan, but when it was made, they made a choice to make it a quiet pc case, not a case made for overclocking. Even with great flow, how great can the cooling be in one of these cases be anyway? Geez... Oh well, anyhow, it is very very quiet. I really love the 120mm fan in the PS. The slot fan that's included probably isn't doing much, but it can't hurt.

It really is almost unbelievable that this thing can have three hard drives! I even had three in it at first because I had two that needed data taken off of the two extra, and it worked quite nicely. I don't know why anyone would permanently need more than one but... who knows. The front faceplate covering the optical drive is quite nice. I was glad to not have to buy another drive and instead use my current beige one.

What else haven't I mentioned? Well I didn't know that it had two front blue LEDs until I plugged it in. They're pretty neat, and if you don't like them, you can choose not to plug in the molex cable that is giving them power. Also, not many mATX boards will have the correct headers to power the card reader, both USB connectors (three USB headers needed in total) and firewire. That's something to think about when selecting your board.

Taking the case apart is also really easy. I've taken this thing apart so many times its not funny. All you need to do is remove one thumb screw that keeps the top in, slide the top back and up to come off, then press a tab on the side and push the side panel forward to come off (repeat on other side). The cage holding the optical drive and hard drive flips up and lifts out easily. You can even take it out and set it on top of the back of the case without removing any of the IDE or molex connectors (I just did this earlier today when I removed and replaced my heatsink).

Overall I really love this case. I would give it a 4.5 if I could. The ony bad part really is the cooling, but I would rather have a quiet pc running at these temps than a louder one. Oh, and the side panels seem to get scuffed easily, but they all seem to wipe off, no real harm done.

Also, let me say that most AMD processors aren't in trouble until they reach 80C, 60C really isn't anything to worry about. Stock computers with cheap coolers aren't cooling any better...

5What a case! (Except for the card reader).
By R. Hook
My old motherboard died from bad capacitor plague 4 weeks ago and after 6 years of service, it was time to look for a new solution. I decided to use a Micro ATX motherboard so this meant that i didnt have to use my old noisy ATX tower. I looked around for new cases and found a lot of reviews and excitment about the Antec Aria. After a long time checking i finally bought one.At first I was a little suprised by the size of the case..it was bigger than i imagined. But once i put it on my desk it made a lot of sense because its footprint is small. The build quality is superb. All the materials feel well built and professional, the chassis is aluminium and the side and top panels are insulated with plastic to reduce noise. Even the rear of the case looks cool with the huge 12cm fan. The hard disk and DVD rack is genius and i like the fact that i can put 3 hard disks in at the same time (Would be very useful for a home theatre).Building it was quite a challenge and it helps if you have small hands. I inserted the cpu, ram and all the cables on the motherboard before i put it in the case and this helped a lot. I just wish that i removed the case's powersupply before i installed the motherboard because there is not much room to move.I imagined (from the words of Antec) that this would be "the worlds quietest pc" but noise is noticable due to my cpu fan (AMD Sempron 3000+) and the complete lack of sound insulation on the front of the case. There is only thin shiny plastic here along with a thin steel grate for ventilation. I will probably get an aftermarket cpu fan to fix this problem. Happily, the PSU fan and the included cyclone blower are unnoticable and seem to extract quite a bit of hot air. Note: The PSU fan can be plugged into the motherboards "case fan" header so you can monitor its speed!Im not so happy about the included card reader, it just does not work! When i was first trying to re-install XP from the boot cd, the computer would crash badly with a blue screen of death complaining about a usb hub. Once i disconnected this though, my re-install went perfectly. Even after i installed Service pack 2 and all the latest updates from Windows update, i receive the same blue screen error. I have sent an email to Antec and im waiting for their response to that issue. Ive even tried using headers on a PCI USB2 card to see if my motherboard was the cause of conflict. Needless to say, i still get the same BSOD error. So overall, im happy with my new computer except for the card reader. PS: Make sure your DVD recorder has its eject button on the far right side of its face, so that you can use the beatiful drive cover. Its a lot more elegant than my old mac g4 and g3 drive covers..they were shockers. And make sure your motherboard has a ten pin firewire header for the front port!**15/02/2006 update**- I contacted Antec about 3 weeks ago about my card reader problem. They said that my unit must have been faulty so they sent me another one (at no charge). Im happy to report that the new reader performs perfectly.- Also, i fitted a Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCu CPU cooler to reduce my CPU fan noise and the computer is now pleasantly quiet. Just like the way Antec advertised it.

5best microATX case
By Dumb as Mud
Don't worry about heat. With a all time 50% cpu load the cpu and motherboard increased only 10 degrees each without cyclone blower. The design inside of this is most unusual. With 3 hd and one cd drive in bay, it will take some planning and practice to finally hook up power cables and controllers without blowing your stack, very compact. And when booting up you discover you need to go inside a few more times you won't find it to be much fun. The case comes with many extra cables that take advantage of features on motherboard, pretty exciting, have a few more to try out, one is a fancy audio header. Installing the cards is more trouble than standard cases but also better, warped cards don't do well. Taking out the power fan noise is a big improvement, now I can hear the TV and radio, but a stock Intel cpu fan is to blame for the rest. The usb ports and card reader in front actually work no problem on a Asus TUSI-M motherboad. There is also room on pci slots for 3 cards and the cyclone blower on top. With 3 hd's pci slot #3 must use a half size card or the side hd will hit it. It took 5 hours and 15 minutes to transfer old into new, with only one cut and one dead video card. There are no quality control problems with this. It is running a pentium III 1.2ghz (107 degrees) The Asus is 113 degrees, and without the low speed cyclone blower, and the drive bay is maxed out, and 3 card slots full. Once again you will be quite surprised with the design inventions in this and very high quality, but the manual has poor information/ instructions, but good english.

5BEST AND EASIEST MAP MAKER OUT THERE
By Map_maker
I struggled with ARCMAP because is powerful but also because it so hard to use. This program is so easy and makes a profession map. I can now make a detailed map and print in under 20 minutes. The same map in ARCMAP took me 8 hours. Buy it you will not regret it.

5Terrific GPS for Family Geocaching
By J. B. Quattlebaum
My 8-year old son read an article about Geocaching and really got excited. I wanted to get a GPS handheld that offered great value and ease-of-use. I tried the Garmin eTrex, eTrex Legend, Geko and the Magellan eXplorist 200 (a local Geocaching club let me field test the units) and I downloaded the manuals from the Garmin/Magellan websites and poured over them. The verdict -- I bought the eXplorist 200. The base map gives you the major freeways, highways, and cities -- even parks and national landmarks. The buttons and functions were the most intuitive of any of the models tested -- very important when you have children operating the unit. The LCD screen is as big as the expensive models and highly legible in ambient light. My son loves it and the entire family is getting lots of hikes and geocaching done in the great outdoors. What happens next? I will save up for a more powerful unit with a PC connection, map software, etc, now that we are hooked on GPS navigation. The eXplorist will remain with my son -- like cell phones, it is always a good idea to have an extra one around...

4Good for driving and backpacking.
By John E. Pombrio
I love this little critter. I find the built in map for driving handles most major roads and all of the interstates. On my latest 14 hour trip to several relatives, I was on a marked road 98% of the time. Zooming out tells me when intersections will be coming and the GOTO ETA is pretty much right on (when will we be home, daddy? 1 hour 27 minutes plus or minus 5 minutes... Oh...) Thing is as bad as a cell phone for driving distraction.Screen is very nice. Contrast is great. Looks good from full sun to dim light and the night light takes over from there. Words are very legible (it does take some skill to read Lake Mooselookmyguntic while driving tho)Accuracy while hiking will get you within 30 feet regularly so works for trail finding and maps. The joystick does take some getting used to but works fine once you get the hang (push from the side not from the top). Lots of self help built in (reading material on my long walks out). Battery life is good and I use rechargeable double AAs NIMH and get a good 6-7 hours out of them. I carry a couple of extra with me. Swapping batteries is easy and can be done without tools but needs bare fingers to unscrew the D ring screw. Nothing is lost when swapping batteries. Takes about 1-2 minutes to sync up with the satellites when turned on. Picks up the satellites well in my pocket or nestled in the cars door handle. The night light feature is very nice and does not knock too much off of the battery. Lightweight, takes a drop onto concrete with just a nick here or there on the case. Buttons have a good feel and can be manipulated by feel while driving. Buttons need to be pushed with bare fingers or very thin gloves. One very neat feature is that the sun and moon are located on the compass when they are above the horizon. Donno how they do that. Compass works only when moving but it only takes a few steps to get it to workFor backpacking there is one major issue. The odometer does not track accurately in the woods. If the GPS loses track somewhere where the trees are thick, the odometer stops logging during that time. The funny thing is that the active track is spot on. Just use the active track to figure out how far you have walked. The breadcrumbs work great. I could care less about downloading content or maps or topo stuff. That is what printed maps are for and I would never trust an electronic device to get me out anyways.

3Explorist 200 has no PC interface
By Francis S. Fitzgerald
Why does this handheld need 16 mb of memory when the unit only comes with 10 mb of maps loaded and no PC interface. The specs are misleading and I feel stupid having not done more research before purchasing this unit. The Explorist 210 has a PC interface and 22 mb of space to load more maps if needed. My main gripe is that I work with GIS and I wanted to be able to grab my waypoints off the unit via a usb, but now I have to enter them manually. Normally this wouldn't be a huge deal, but I may have hundreds by the time I'm done. I recommend this unit if you want a nice, light, good display, and feature for the money, but if your looking for PC interconnectivity, then buy the Explorist 210 or 400. The Explorist 100/200/and 300 don't have this feature. Also don't buy the PC cable at the bottom of the page that Amazon recommends because it fits a different Magellan series all together.F Scot

5Exactly as expected
By Hammerhead
I purchased this as a Christmas gift for a friend, to display at office or home. Excellent quality, colors and graphics. Slightly disappointed that it wouldn't fit over average adult's head, for photo purposes, but I suspect the manufacturer does this intentionally for safety/liability issues, as it's meant to only be a replica.

5Highly recommend !!!!!!!!
By Amalfi Coast Girl
I love this gadget! I would not have initially purchased this for myself, but now I absolutely love having this level of control over pan temperatures. I use this product at least 6 days a week. The only days this product is not used in my kitchen are the days that I don't cook.I don't just use this product on the stove top I also use it to check the temperature of the pizza stone in my oven so that we get a crispy pizza crust every time. I also use it to confirm that the food that I am "holding" in a low oven is out of the danger zone for the days when dinner is delayed waiting for someone to get home. I also use this item to confirm that food has cooled down enough to go into the refrigerator without compromising the integrity of the food already in there. Additionally, I use this item to check the temperature of food inside the refrigerator to be certain that it is keeping food at below 40 degrees. If you are a serious cook I cannot recommend this product strongly enough. Knowing the actual temperature of your pan, pizza stone and food translates into perfect results every time.

5Boujour laser thermometer
By Mr. Walter H. Toki
I have used the Bonjour thermometer for about a year. The thermometer is quite accurate (~1F). I have tested itin the oven and in the refrigerator. I find it very usefulto measure the temperature of grills, hot frying oils, calphalonpans, heavy cast iron skillets, simmering sauces, woks, and oven stones.Measuring the temperatures of frying oils or getting the cast iron skilletsreally hot (600F) enough for searing steaks are ideal for the laserthermometers. I can now get a steak perfectly seared everytime resultingin a juicy and tender steak. The secret was getting thepan to the right initial temperature. Now the user should be bewarethat the temperature depends on the emissivity of the material, someasuring the surface of shiny pans (ex. my expensive french copper pans ) will yieldthe wrong temperatures. So far I have not yet figured out how tomeasure the temperatures in my favorite Dehillerin copper saute panyet.
