5This is a great, cheap to run filter!
By J. Burke
Unlike other filters that force you to spend money on new filters pads every two weeks, spending a lot on money you didn't think you would have to, this filter does not require replacement filter pads. Instead, it has a block of foam that is used to trap the dirt in the water. Every two weeks, simple clean the foam in water by squeezing it a few times! Just do it in your water changing bucket with de-chlorinated water. You can change the carbon filter whenever you choose to. In fact, it is not needed all that much. I have run my tanks without carbon for a month at a time, no big deal. If the water starts to look yellow or brown, it is time to change it and put in some fresh carbon.

5Great filter
By L. Zuluaga
I bought my AquaClear 30 in early July. It was definitely quieter than the previous filter and seemed to do a better job keeping the tank clear. I've had it long enough to have cleaned it and, as filter cleaning goes, I find this design very user friendly. Then, yesterday, we had a power bounce and the filter didn't come back. After eliminating the outlet as a problem, I noticed the bottom of the unit was very warm. I unplugged it, let it cool, plugged it back in. Nothing. Today, I went to my nearest PetCo for a new filter. The filter is under warranty but I needed something for the fish today. Upon learning which filter I had, then gentleman helping me said that these filters almost never die and his is about 14 years old. He showed me how to remove the propeller box and clean it out. He told me that sometimes debris settles during a power failure and the propeller can't turn when the power comes back. He was right. I got home, took 2 minutes to clean the propeller, and we're back in business. No need for a new filter after all! I'm feeling really good about my choice of filter. Easy to maintain (once you know what you're doing) and works well!

4A very effective, powerful, and inexpensive filter.
By M. Newman
There is so much to say about this filter, it's hard to know where to start.I bought this filter to replace a very ineffective Marineland Pengiun HOB filter. I have a 20 gallon tank, but have a heavy bioload due to a dozen or so fish being born in our tank (thank you Petsmart). The issues we ran into with the Penguin filter were many (see my review), so I looked for a more powerful and configurable filter. The Aquaclear 70 fit the bill. The housing has plastic walls that I think are a bit thin. I feel the need to be very careful with it when I take it apart and put it back together. That's about the only critical thing I have to say about this filter. It has a dial on the back to help keep the filter level. The impeller and motor can be easily replaced with a simple twist. You get two intakes with this unit, so you can have it at mid-level, or extend it to get closer to the bottom. The intake swivels a bit, which causes a reduction in the water intake. This is a very useful feature, as it recycles some of the water already in the filter to mix with the water from the intake to give you extra clean water, just at a slower rate. This also comes in handy when you want to reduce the water disturbance for feeding. The filter media included with the unit is exceptional. You get a filter sponge that catches the debris, a carbon "sock" to catch the very fine particles and chemicals, and "bio max" which is just a media to keep beneficial bacteria. The sponge can be rinsed and reused to your heart's content. It's very sturdy and seems to be effective. The carbon "sock" is huge! Although there is some debate among aquarists if you need continual carbon filtration or not, you certainly can get a lot of chemical filtration should you so desire. The last media, "Bio Max", is rough surfaced cylinders meant to capture bacteria to help keep your tank clean. This is very helpful since, if you were to replace your sponge and carbon, the beneficial bacteria would still reside in the "Bio Max".Now the true beauty isn't with what you get (which, again, is great), it's what you can CHOOSE to do. The filter housing is very simple, and you can put in most any filter media you want. You can cut filter fabric to size, remove the carbon and add another sponge, or use a different biological filtration method. This, I feel, is key to running a clean tank. If I were to treat the tank with a chemical, I can simply remove the carbon and leave the other filter media in place. This wasn't possible with the Penguin and wound up being a serious problem.Another great aspect of the filter media is the price. Seeing as how you don't need to replace the sponge or biological media, you just have to replace the carbon "sock". With that, you can buy a replacement for this specific model filter, or you can create your own by buying a filter sock and carton of activated carbon. We've been running the filter for months without issue... Ok, somehow our Otocinclus got into the filter. Luckily, I found him and got him back into the tank. He must have been watching when we had Finding Nemo on the TV. Maybe an intake with thinner grates would be something to explore. One thing I would caution against is Hagen's return procedure. I had picked up one of these from Petsmart and it was defective (I'm almost certain it was used and Petsmart put it back on the shelves). Hagen said that if I want to return it to them, I would have to pay for all of the shipping. Luckily, Petsmart exchanged it without issue.I highly suggest this filter and hope it will work out as well for you as it has for me.

5Good ball
By Mark Twain
Bright and easy to see, holds it's bounce pretty well, won't go dead as fast as other balls. I bought a can of these along with 3 different kinds and played all 12 balls under the same conditions. These Penn ATPs had better bounce and were not as soft. Since I did that test I just buy these by the case.

5Gentleman's Belt Knife
By Devildog0402
This was my first Helle and I love it. Excellent fit and finish. Just a beautiful piece and extremely sharp out of the box. This is not one of my primary field knives, but I use this one more on a day to day basis. Small enough that you can be discreet in carrying it, but large enough to do some good carving work. Very pleased with this purchase.

5Great knife, handle fits larger hands well, fantastic blade, good sheath.
By R Gibbons
Handle Size: I have large hands, and need big handles on things to feel comfortable (Use large grips on tennis racket, golf clubs; wear large to X-large gloves). This is the first knife that fits my hand well, feels great.Blade: Very Sharp, slices paper like the best of scissors, sharpest blade I've seen. The triple layer has softer metal protection layers on the outside, and hard durable inner layer for the edge. I like the shape of the point (drops down at the back spine toward the blade at the point), which suits my needs better than the blades that curve backward at the point. I bought the knife for the blade (which is also sold separately if you want to make your own handle). The blade is a solid 5 stars.Handle finish: Not as good as I expected for this price. The edges of the metal finger guard and back of the wooden handle were uncomfortably sharp (not finished smooth with rounded edges); I took a fine file and sand paper to the 90 degree edges, and re-oiled the handle, it feels good now. Also, there were two small holes (as wide as a pencil lead) in the handle (cracks or defects in the wood from a twig growing out of the tree, not manufacturing damage); I filled these with wood putty, now I don't worry about gunk getting stuck in those holes and rotting the wood at that spot. Both these things should have been finished/fixed at the factory, rather than by the customer. I almost took a star off for this, but after 30 minutes work, it is a great knife.Sheath: Looks nice, well built. Thick sturdy leather. Inside there is a plastic (or similar synthetic) layer that keeps the blade from cutting the sheath. The sheath is a snug fig, so even without the flap buttoned over the brass knob at the end of the handle, it wouldn't fall out on it's own.I really like this knife a lot; and would recommend to people with medium to large hands; Blade is good size for survival knife. Manufacturer has life time warranty (except for abuse).

5Fine Norse craftmanship
By Jeffrey R. Merrill
I happen to like Scandinavian knives for quality, design and value. Their triple laminated steel is unmatched. These knife is hand forged by Helle in Norway and is unbelievably sharp right out of the box. The traditional sheath is top quality leather. The birch and antler handle fills my hand well and is very comfortable to grip. I chose this particular knife as multi-function utility blade. For more detailed information on Helle knives go to[...] In my opinion, this finely crafted knife is well worth the money.

5Great Axe, both single and double handed
By Darkglobe
Like others, I too took my time picking out an axe. I canoe and hike, plus spend time clearing around the house and cottage.I originally thought about a Hudson Bay axe (Snow and Nealley), but realized that it wasn't truly made in the USA (heads are cast in China), further research showed various flaws because of this, and several disappointed owners because of numerous reasons. Then one day I saw the Gransfors Bruks in a store, and decided I must have one. It looked to be made by a human being for a human being, not by machine, in essence, an axe that should last many lifetimes providing chopping pleasure for each of it's owners. So back to researching this discovery, price prevented an impulse buy since I didn't realize what I was truly looking at. Upon further researching, I discovered this other gem of an axe (whom is actually owned by the same owner / axe nut of Gransfors Bruks, the two companies are treated separately though). The price is certainly better, it's just as beautiful, and comparisons between the two seemed to favour the Wetterlings while in use (balance seems better). It too had all the allure of being handmade, perhaps even more so than the 'Bruks (Wetterlings handles are turned in *their* factory, I believe Gransfors has theirs made elsewhere) so I figured I'd give one a crack.First test was some limbing and knocking back some trees at the cottage, namely white birch and pine. One birch was 3" in diameter (green), I would have had it down in two swings but my second swing was a little off (was cutting in an awkward space, not the axes fault) so three it was. I've never used an axe that cut so deep and with excellent control, it's balance really makes it shine. The pines were only a couple inches diameter for the most part, some were a one swing deal, others were a two, it really made quick work of things.Next test was setting up my camping hammock. Here I required some stakes to tie the tarp guides to, so I made some stakes from some nearby bushes from under the trees. I trimmed the stakes with one hand since I required the other to hold things, and again one clean, quick, well controlled cut. I hammered them into the ground with the poll and tied things down, all went better than I had planned. The only thing is the length may be an issue for some, namely for packing, but I've managed to strap it on my pack without issue (cannot fault the axe here, if you don't like the length, get a smaller one). The sheath allows placing the axe on the belt, but I find it a little long for walking through the brush. Length from a usage perspective is perfect for my uses. I can handle it easily with one or two hands, for the one handed situations, simply choke up on the handle, making it flexible for usage as a small axe or as a hatchet. It came with a shaving sharp edge and maintained it's edge throughout the experiment, and sharpens to a hair splitting edge if so desired (not surprisingly since its made with some very nice Swedish steel). The sheath is top notch, covers the business end of the head, complete with brass rivets holding things safely together.Price seems high for "just an axe", but after using it and considering how much pleasure its use brings, it's really not. When I am using it, I consider it cheap therapy.I'll soon be in need of a splitting axe, and for sure I will be back for one of those.

3mine might be a mistake
By Norgrim
So i spent alot of time looking into what axe i wanted to take out camping and backpacking. I choose the Wetterlings because of the cost to quality ratio. Its a great little axe for the price. light weight and sharp, will chop deep and fast. However on only my second test at chopping (first was green wood polls) the bottom of the blade chippes OFF. not i got a little chip in the blade and didnt bother to sharpen it out. i mean a 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch CHUNK. Ill be sending it back once i return from this trip. Ill gladly give Wetterlings a second chance, my bladde could have just had a bad heat treatment or something along those lines.

5Great Purchase
By K. W. Johnson
My initial impressions:-Well worth the money. Quality seems appropriate for an axe you could use frequently for a generation's worth of camping.-Slag gives the head a rustic look; however, the blade has been polished far enough back from the edge that the slag won't interfere with the function of the axe.-Edge seems to be flat ground until about 1 inch behind the edge then slightly convexed to a hair-shaving sharp blade.-The poll/butt is slightly rounded but seems able to hammer home a wedge or tree nail fine.-The handle is a straight grained hickory (mine is mostly sapwood) and the grain actually follows the curvature of the haft through the throat to the grip.My overall impression is extremely positive. I could see myself owning this axe and passing it one to my son or daughter. I used this on my last camping trip and didn't find the size unobtrusive. I didn't experience any abnormal dulling, no chipping or rolled edges. If I were able to buy two, I'd buy the small hunting axe or the wildlife axe as well, but if I could only have one, it would be this axe.

5Great Axe, great customer service from seller.
By Someguy
First, the axe. Oh my, what a perfect tool. Well balanced, good feel, sharp as all heck. Please note that the sheath shown in the picture is NOT the sheath or handle that comes with the axe. It's hard to say if this is a change from the mfg'r or just an old pic of the axe. Worth every single penny. Can't wait to use them!Second, Thompson Tools and the shipping. Initially there was a major, major issue with the shipping. I posted negative, but truthful, info about my shipment. Matthew from Thompson was on it like white on rice. He rectified the situation beyond what I would have ever expected; even went so far as to personally call me to make sure I was happy/satisfied. I am now. Kudo's to Thompson for incredible customer service.

4i got the Wildlife Axe.
By claw
not so clear if i am reviewing this "hunter's" axe or the wildlife axe. dimensions are the same. whatever.GREAT TOOL! it came out of the box gosh-darn sharp. some quick swipes with a diamond sharpener..and yeozah!! it is now very sharp. fit and finish is not wonderful. the handles sticks out the top of the axe head about 1/4", and looks like the craftsman missed on a few swings while tapping in the round wedge. the top looks beat. there are chunks of wood missing. which appears to have happened during the wedge install. the axe head was also fairly rusted. i cleaned it all up with some 800grit paper. the blackened sections of the head, i left the rust and oiled it up. both of these are minor complaints; i cannot see how performance could be affected. just dumb aesthetics. i dont know if my axe was sitting on a shelf for a long time, but i got the sheath pictured. it is way more rustic and robust than the sheath on my Gransfor. the leather is heavier, and less "boutique" feeling. i like this sheath way better. i understand they have changed the sheath on newer tools (?). (i also read somewhere the newer tools have no steel wedge)i turned a bunch of small branches into kindling. fun!! keep in mind, a short axe is a more dangerous axe. you can swing this into your shin with ease. safety first!! this axe is overall pretty light. and if i am backpacking on a trip i am not worried about every little ounce..it will be coming with me. i bet i can dismantle a moose with this thing. not clear on how i could get any warranty work done. no instructions about warranty included.so in summary, i give it 4-stars. one star penalty for the aesthetic issues. i think that is fair, for a relatively expensive tool. but i love it, and i may buy my brother in law one for a gift.edit* just wanted to add that the handle was installed with the grain not oriented perfectly. staring at the end of the handle, the grain was 45 deg from perfect. i dont think this is a big deal on a hatchet. i cant imagine me breaking the handle from the expected light duty. i also oiled the handle initally, it was very very dry.
