When you need reliability...

I love this single burner range...I serially bought one of several different models (of single burner ranges) locally, tested them, and returned them all. I was disgusted. Then I got this one. It was considerably more expensive, but its rock-solid and has been in use about 18 hours a day, 24 in some cases, for several months.Its a great size for pans and regular pots, but a bit too large for the smaller pots, like 1-1.5 qt (or even a 2.5 qt, if the latter's got a windsor bottom).It warms up very quickly, and cools off more gently. If you're used to cooking with gas, this will be a shock because it's cast iron and holds the heat. If you're experienced in cooking with cast iron (pots, pans, ranges :), you'll find it utterly predictable, or at least I do. Sometimes you just have to remove the pan for a few seconds and turn OFF (not down) the heat.I consider it easy to clean. I've never done more than blow a few crumbs off on the cast iron burner, but I imagine it IS a sponge eater if you scrub it with one (as noted by another reviewer). The burner has a rough surface, but that's all good in my book. It keeps pots and pans from too easily or inadvertantly sliding off the range - prevents potential disaster! The part of the range that I'm really concerned about keeping clean is what all surrounds the burner. That part is all brushed steel, with no seams or holes or "gingerbread", very sturdy, very professional, and a real breeze to keep clean.Did I mention that I totally love this range, despite the hefty price? It was designed for working cooks, imho. If I ever need yet another burner, I won't bat an eyelash at getting this same model, or at recommending it to a friend.Apr '09 ----- >2 years after original reviewStill in near constant use, still working perfectly, still loving it...Jun '12 ---- Still the most used tool in our kitchen, still find it a joy to own.

Better Than Expected

I was worried about ordering online and not being able to see the product in person. I was so surprised that it was so much better than I expected. I used it for canning and had a giant pressure cooker sitting on it. It performed perfectly and because it is so well made I expect that it will last me for years. Due to the fact the top area around the burner is metal you do not have to worry about a large pot extending out over the side of the burner and melting any plastic like other models on the internet. Well worth the price.

Quality, well designed single burner

I purchased this single burner for use while our kitchen is being remodeled. It was so worth the extra money . It has a nice sealed cast iron burner. It heats up quickly and boils large pots of water for pasta very easily. It has plenty of BTU's for everyday use, and the cast iron burner provides even heat. It is very sturdy and stable. The feet are rubberized so it doesn't slide around and they are of a good height so it won't overheat what it is sitting upon. The workings are all contained in an easy to clean stainless steel housing. I have cooked beans, taco meat, pasta, skillet dishes of chicken and rice, salmon curry, and tonight lentils and sausage. It is as nice, if not nicer, than any electric burner I have used that was part of an electric stove (I have been using a Wolf gas stove for the last 11 years). I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this burner, I am very particular. Don't waste your money on the cheap ones.

High-quality DVD recorder

This Panasonic DVD-R recorder is the best way to get started on DVD recording. This is not to say this is a "basic" unit. It has lots of features like time slipping. But I'm the kind of VCR users who never went beyond basic playback, recording, and programmed recording. The Panasonic is very easy to use, esp. if you already know how to use a VCR. If you want to get sophisticated, the advanced featuers are there for you to play with.What's important is the Panasonic works very well. I transfered my old VHS tapes to DVD-R, and all the discs burned without a hitch. I also record a couple TV shows on the machine, and it's never failed me. Panasonic was the first company to come out with DVD recorders and the maturity of this product means it's also reliable.Yes, this model is identical internally to the black DMR-E55K model. I personally prefer silver.

Consider the highly improved replacement, Panasonic DMR-ES10

The Panasonic DMR-E55 is highly rated, but with some limitations, and I was considering getting one. But Panasonic just came out with a replacement, the DMR-ES10, which not only fixes most of the problems/limitations of the E55 but is also a mind-bendingly reasonable $200 list price. It just hit the shelves a few days ago, and I was lucky enough to be there at the right time and ended up with a unit. I love it. See the review I'm writing under the ES10.Even if you find a good deal on a used/refurbished/closeout E55, you might at least want to consider the ES10 for its improved functionality.[I gave the E55 a 4* rating to avoid skewing the ratings. I've noticed that when people don't rate a product, that counts as 0 *'s]

Recorder is VERY flaky

I bought this DVD player over the summer in the hope of burning DVDs for programs that had been originally recorded on TiVo or VHS tapes.I found the device for the most part to be relatively intuitive. The process of recording is straightforward. The recorder can record onto DVD-R (basically, record once) discs. I stayed away from using DVD-RAM discs because they are expensive and not widely used.Recording onto a DVD-R disc is a 2-step process:1. you record 1 or more tracks2. at some point, you finalize the disc. When you finalize the disc, the disc is no longer writable, and you are able (theoretically) to play the finalized disc in any DVD-R compatible playerI was, initially, quite happy with the product, until we started to run into problems.A huge issue is that the recorder occasionally craps out when you are recording tracks. Once it craps out, you can't finalize the disc, which means you either can only play it on this recorder or not at all.Here are the specific problems I've run into:1. For one disc (TDK), the recorder can play the disc but can't finalize it. So I am stuck with only being able to play it on this recorder. That's bad. The disc also skips in the same places during playback2. Another disc (TDK) skips in the same places every time during playback. We were able to finalize the disc, but the skipping is annoying3. For another disc (Memorex), the recorder crapped out while I was trying to set the thumbnail clip for a particular track. Now the recorder says the disc is empty. I can't even play the tracks I've already recorded on the recorder. The sad thing is I already deleted those tracks from TiVo (which is what I use to record TV programs), so now those tracks are lost.I ran into problems #1 and #2 using TDK DVD-R discs. So I bought a different brand of disc (Memorex), but I ran into the problem #3 using a Memorex DVD-R disc. My strong impression now is that it is the recorder that is the problem, not the discs. Believe me, I wanted this recorder to not be the problem. It's affordable and like I said earlier, fairly user-friendly, and I don't like wasting time with the learning curve of a new device.Once the recorder hoses the DVD-R disc, it seems extremely difficult to get the data back. I tried a bunch of Windows programs (e.g. Isobuster) with no luck. I even tried some command-line utilities on Linux.If you purchase or own this device, my strong advice to you is to only record 1 or 2 programs before finalizing. And don't delete your original copies until after you've finalized the disc. Obviously, you shouldn't have to worry about not being able to finalize. You should be able to record as many tracks as you want until the disc is near full. But my experience is that you increase the likelihood of hosing the disc irreparably.Do a search on "Panasonic can't finalize" and you'll see lots of other Panasonic recorder owners who have run into similar problems like I've described.Problem #3 caused me to lose clips that I REALLY want to have. I am going to have to resort to paying a company to try to recover the data, which isn't cheap.As a last piece of advice, if you can afford it, I recommend that you get a -RW or +RW recorder. Since researching the problems, I've read a lot of stuff on the Internet that say that the process of finalizing discs is fraught with issues, regardless of the recorder manufacturer.I did call Panasonic customer service, and they were entirely unhelpful. They got value out of the call (by collecting marketing information about me: where I live, my name, when I bought it) but they were entirely unhelpful. The CSR said there is no way to recover the data. Their simple advice was: use only Panasonic DVD-R discs. That's garbage, and this whole experience was so frustrating I want to spare others my aggravation.

Great Western wok, differs dramatically from traditional Chinese wok

For a flat bottomed, Western style wok that will work on flat ranges / stove tops, this is an excellent wok.Recommended if you can afford the it!For it:- Excellent heat distribution / conductivity / diffusion thanks to aluminum core. This wok heats quickly throughout the flat bottom and heats gently up the sides.- Grips food well enough when pushing food up the sides to lower temperatures.- Low heat retention compared to thick cast iron.- Excellent All-Clad build quality. This wok is sturdy!- Cleans up easily with hot water, soap, and light scrubbing.- 18/0 magnetic stainless steel bottom works great on induction range.- No non-stick coating. You can get this wok very hot for proper stir frying!- Wide. Ample space for a large stir fry. This is both a pro and a con since it will consume a lot of space on your range.Against it:- Heavy (about 5 pounds or 2.3 kg). Weak arms may not be able to lift this easily. If you're a chef and/or accustomed to a cast iron wok, you'll have no issue lifting and flipping food.- Awkward stick handle. The long stick handle protrudes almost straight out of the wok, is rather thin, and has a ridge. If you normally use a shorter, wide, cylindrical stick handle, or the dual loop handles, you may not like this wok's handle. It's it's a negligible design flaw though.- If you're looking for the feel and handling of a thin, relatively light, carbon steel Chinese wok, this is not it!- Shallow. This is shallower by about 5mm or more than an average Western flat bottom wok.- Higher heat retention than carbon steel.- High price relative to carbon steel wok.Conclusion:This is an excellent Western wok and is a must have if price is not a concern. If you're looking to avoid caring for carbon steel or cast iron (seasoning, rust, breakage), need to use soap to clean up (hygiene requirements, restaurant work), or just prefer leeching nickel from the stainless steel rather than the extra iron from cast iron, this All-Clad wok is a great choice. If you have no such concerns and are equipped with a gas range and wok ring, grab a more authentic round bottomed carbon steel wok instead, but be sure it's multi ply.

Excellent for Large Portions

I did not find a problem with the balance, as previously mentioned by another reviewer. The only thing a potential buyer needs to be aware of is, that if they are planning on tossing their food, they had better be strong because this unit is heavy! Other than that, it proves to be very useful for large portions. It heats quickly, heats evenly, holds the heat and leaves plenty of room to stir. Yes, it does heat evenly and allows the heat to drift up the sides. The purpose of a stirfry pan is to allow heat to move the sides of the pan to allow food touching the sides of the pan to cook as well. Now keep in mind, there isnt a perfect stirfry pan out on the market if you are cooking on a traditional gas top, flat top or coil range. True frying ala Asian style is done on an open flame!

Really Great "Wok"

I order this for my husband's birthday. He is quite a chef and likes to make Asian stir fry, but his old wok was in need of replacement. Most of our cookware is All-Clad so I ordered this for him and he loved it. I expected great quality from All-Clad and it delivered. Not only does he love the way it cooks but it also cleans beautifully (I know, I do the dishes!). I highly recommend this item.

First entry into the world of DVD - VERY PLEASED

Normally I don't write reviews about electronics, I'm not an electronics expert nor have I used lots of DVD recorders. I'm making an exception with this piece of equipment. I did my research (reading reviews like this one) before purchasing this machine. I'd been waiting until the price of a quality machine came down to a price I felt was reasonable. This machine has been a jewel. I needed to archive a considerable collection of VHS tapes for my personal use (over 200 tapes, most of which were in excess of 1.5 hours each.) So far I have completed over 100 transfers and made only one frisbee, not bad. The quality of the transfers is all I could have hoped for, in fact it's exceptional. For anyone who wants to move a collection from VHS technology to DVD technology I will make 3 suggestions. First, purchase the SIMA GoDVD! unit. It enhances and cleans up weak signals, you'll thank me for this suggestion. Second, get a good VHS cleaner and use it regularly. Last, don't shoot yourself in the foot using the cables that come with these units. Go out and purchase monster cables or their equivalent. Using the skinny little things that come with the unit will keep you from getting the best possible information transfer. If you're watching your dvds on the new generation of television you WILL notice the difference.Last but not least, normally I don't believe in extended warranty contracts. With this unit I made an exception. I bought an 3rd party contract since I learned that Panasonic will keep your unit for months if you utilize their contract. The lasers in these things are pricey and in my opinion worth spending a little money on insurance. Oh, one last thing, be very careful that you DO NOT move your recorder with a DVD disc in the tray. The repair technician I spoke to regarding the contract said that this is the #1 way to screw up a DVD recorder.As to the quality of the user interface. My wife, one of the truly great technophobes of the 21st Century was able to use this machine with a minimum of coaching. It's really pretty easy to use, but like everything it takes a little reading and time to get the hang of it.I'm posting this review as a way to thank those of you who have posted reviews that have helped me make good purchases. What a great way for us to help each other, very empowering.

Plenty of features and easy to use

I can't comment on the longevity of this product, as I've only had it for a few days. But I can comment on the features and ease of use which are excellent. Contrary to the reviewer who said it is extremely hard to set up, I say the opposite. For the rest of us who can easily work a microwave or an electric shaver without incident, this thing is as easy as you'd want. Here's the 'exceedingly' difficult set up routine:1. Plug in all the cables (make sure you get them in the right holes...)2. Turn it on. You'll get a menu asking you what language you speak. Then let it go for a while and it'll set the channels and time for you.3. Whew..we made it past that. Now to program something to record: Press the 'funtions' button and go to the 'timer recording' mode.4. Choose the channel, ENTER, start time, ENTER, end time, ENTER, record mode, ENTER. You're done. Wow. Hard.5. To watch a recorded program, press the navigator button and choose a recording. ENTER.6. To watch from the beginning while you are still recording, press the Time Slip button. Then control it as a regular recording, or press stop to go back to live TV. Easy.For the price this seems to be a great unit. The picture quality is great and it works as advertised. I don't really see the necessity of the 'feature' of being able to use double sided DVDRam discs, because you have to flip them over anyway, so it doesn't really let you record twice as long without intervention.One more note : It says on the box that it supports DVDAudio discs, (music CDs specially split into 5.1 channels). But it specifically says in the book that they will play on this unit on only 2 channels. That doesn't really seem like support for the standard.Overall, it is a great replacement for my piece of junk VCR and is indeed easy to use. Can't go wrong here.

Virtually broadcast quality recordings

I needed a unit that would both record high quality video at the two hour setting as well as decent quality at the four to six hour setting. Saw the five star rating here and knew this was the one.I am very pleased with this unit. I am recording from a DirecTV signal and it seems as if I am watching the actual broadcast. I highly recommend this Panasonic recorder.

Disappointment!

Alfi carafes are great but not this one! Exterior is perfect; inside shows wear (glass lining is spotty looking) but doesn't affect function. The problem is the rubber seal which is loose and allows coffee to pour all over both you and your cup! A mess! I gave it away after one too many spills.

Simply the best...

Yes, it is expensive, but as one other reviewer said; it will last forever.We've now had our Alfi Opal carafe for well over 5 years and it's still going strong. It keeps our coffee hot for hours on end (8+) and has a solid fool-proof seal that has never leaked a drop!BTW, this is not occasional use... we use it at least twice a day, 7 days a week!We brew our coffee straight into the carafe and simply rinse it out after we're done. The best carafe ever!

Having worn through many coffee carafes that have push-button lids that eventually stop working, we found this carafe that just has a lever to open the lid. Simple mechanics that can't break is the best policy when you want something to last forever. Pay $200 now or buy 5 others at $40+ and dump in the trash.

Great Little Camera Bag

I'm a long-time user of Billingham Hadley bags, finding them to be excellent protection for my rangefinder cameras and lenses. Why? There's superb canvas and fabric construction that provides exemplary insulation from unexpected shocks, such as bumping into objects and people. Moroever, the construction is so solid, that the bag wears nicely with age (I'd rather have my bag suffer abuse from long-time usage than my camera equipment. The black and tan version of this small Hadley is also quite beautiful, and doesn't attract too much attention from potential thieves. Purchasing a Billingham Hadley bag might seem like an expensive indulgence, but it is one that's well worth it given the bag's excellent construction, long-time durability, and, most importantly, excellent protection of camera equipment. Users of digital SLR equipment may find this bag quite suitable too for a small digital SLR and a lens or two. But I think this bag will be primarily of interest of owners of Leica, Voigtlander and Zeiss Ikon rangefinder cameras who are interested in travelling light with a camera body and a few lenses (The bag is spacious enough to accomodate two Leica M rangefinder cameras attached with wide angle or normal lenses, plus additional room for another wide angle lens or a compact telephoto lens too.).

Perfect for Smaller Camera and Lens Kits

After considerable internet research and You Tube video watching, I decided on the Hadley Pro for travel and street shooting. Its three padded compartments, with extra padded stacking dividers, were perfect for an M9, a couple of extra lenses, a few filters, cards, etc. That takes up two compartments, so the third is available for my back-up LX-5 or a water bottle. The unpadded front pockets hold a great deal as well. They accommodate CD/DVDs in cases, chargers, even small paperbacks.Inside the bag, but behind the padded insert there is just enough room for my 13" MacBook Pro, although that will make the back of the bag, up against the body, have a harder feel. The laptop sits up a bit above the padded dividers, but the top still closes over it if the straps are loosened a bit. Outside in back is a zippered pocket that holds letter-sized papers and pamphlets but not a letter-sized legal pad. It would also be fine for an iPad.I now use the Pro for my briefcase on most days, and that allows me to keep my camera with me through the day. The bag is so nicely made and easy to use that I am considering getting its bigger brother for longer trips as a carry-on.The strap is easy to adjust and comfortable, but without a spearate pad, it might be uncomfortable to load the Pro up with a laptop, cameras, lenses, water and other heavy items for a long carry. But my usual load is probably under 5 pounds (no laptop usually). The grab handle on the top of the bag is also a nice feature -- I don't have to hunt for the strap to pick the bag up.Billingham bags are expensive, but it is easy to see that they are superior products in design and manufacture. The price I got through Amazon saved me quite a bit, though, so I was happy for that.Anyone considering this bag, or any other for that matter, should take the time to decide just how it will be used. If possible, try the bag out in person with your gear to avoid guessing. But I didn't have that luxury, so I had to measure and guess a bit. The videos on You Tube helped a great deal, and it worked out fine.

Best. Bag. Ever.

Yes, its expensive. But that is the only thing that should be holding you back.Its a Billingham. You know you want it. Just fork over the cash and make the investment. It will last you decades and become heirloom quality.I bought this bag because I wanted a small-ish everyday satchel that I can use to always have my 5D with me. This works perfectly in this regard as A4 size papers fit inside. My 15" laptop does fit but I have to take the photo insert out. If you want to carry a netbook AND a pro body you might have to look somewhere else. The Hadley Pro is thin and is supposed to be close to your body. I would get the Hadley Large but it does not have the handle. Trust me, you need that handle.I highly recommend getting the shoulder pad (Billingham SP40). I have a Domke shoulder pad but the SP40 is smaller and more comfortable. Plus its real leather. The Domke gets worn very, very quickly.Its the perfect everyday bag. It might be the perfect gig bag too with the addition of twin Avea 5 pouches.

Looks Great...works just as good as most though...

I thought I'd purchase this carafe based on the reviews in hopes that it would keep coffee warmer for a longer period of time but...it doesn't. I sort of was thinking German made like a Mercedes but this isn't going to make the "million mile club." It is adorable though. I've filled it with hot tap water and also boiling water and let it sit for 5 minutes before emptying the water and adding the coffee. It keeps the coffee hot for about an hour and then warm for a couple hours but certainly not all day or even more than a couple hours like some reviews said. Not much better than reliable Thermos brand. Again though, if you are into the "looks of stuff," then this is great to look at but in my opinion not worth $70!

Love it

This multivitamin is the best I've ever come across. I'm a vegan and while I generally try to consume all my necessary vitamins and minerals via fresh fruits and vegetables, I still take multivitamins. I've been using it for over a year and a half and it makes me feel great. I have had negative experiences in the past with multivitamins-- nausea, upset stomach, breakouts etc. but this multivitamin does not cause any of those symptoms. All praises aside, I find that the dosage to be extraordinarily high for just one day (8 pills per day), so I will take anywhere from 2-4 pills a day (depending upon how I feel that particular morning).

Great Quality

I had a hard time finding a laptop bag in the stores that was big enough for a 17 inch widescreen and when I did see a couple here and there they were of inferior quality. Then I came on Amazon and saw this one. This is the Perfect bag with ample room to store all you need. You can fit a lot in the bag besides the laptop. It contains several other compartments to store whatever else youd like to take along with you. The bag is made of high quality leather and has an adjustable strap you can either attach or just carry the bag by the handle. This is a very well made notebook holder and you will be proud to carry it. Highly Recommended/Good Value for the money.

"Excellent Product At A Very Reasonable Price"

I own a HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop with a 17" screen and I wanted to buy a light leather case for it. I searched HP website and they highly recommended the Targus TLE400 for my laptop. I am glad I bought it because my laptob is already 9 lbs in weight and all the other cases for sale out there are too bulky and too heavy. This case is very light considering is made of leather, it only weights 5.1 lbs.Even though is a light case and it will accomodate a 17" screen comfortably and you still have room for the power cord and other miscellaneous components you might need to carry with you.It's rugged and I am sure that it will last me a long time but at the same time Targus offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty, so you can't go wrong.

A Quality Product

My new MacBook Pro 17" fits the Targus TLE400 case with room to spare and padding to protect this expensive laptop. I also carry around the power adaptor, a mouse, file folders and paper for meetings, and frequently a GPS sensor. The case is relatively lightweight, but made of good material. The leather is very nice, but there is also a lot of plastic in this case. However, it is also of good quality. I like the rubber skids on the bottom of the case and the double zippers for most closures. The removable velcro mesh pocket is great for storing the Mac's power adaptor and an ethernet cable. I never use the cell phone pocket, but I do use the pencil/pen holders and the various size pockets for media, spare batteries, etc. I enjoy the comfortable shoulder carrying strap, but I frequently also use the smaller handles when picking up or moving the case/computer. I would buy it again.
