5A must-have tool, well worth the cost
By John W. Wendt
I had previously purchased a Dowl-it jig, and was dis-satisfied due to its imprecision. The Dowl-it jig is a self-centering jig, meaning that it is supposed to put the dowel hole exactly in the middle of your workpiece. Regrettably, it doesn't quite do this, with the result being that your joined pieces never quite line up, and you are stuck with a lot of sanding to hide your imperfections. It also cannot handle with any precision operations which require many dowel holes, such as joining two long pieces together. The Dowelmax is not a self-centering jig. It takes a completely different, and more useful, approach--it spaces the dowel holes at an exact distance from any given wood face. Its precision is derived from the fact that due to the way it is constructed, it always allows you to drill the hole from the same face. So the pieces always line up perfectly. Even if the planks you are joining are not the same thickness, you can always get them to line up perfectly on one face. The spacers included in the kit allow you to put in your dowels at different distances from the face or make multiple, precise rows. So, if you want the faces to offset, you can do that too. In fact, using washers (2 1/16" are provided, and you can add more) you can make this thing offset at ANY distance. So far, every application I have imagined, I've been able to implement with the DowelMax. That includes putting in dowels at slight angles, so I could make a chair with a narrower back than front. (You won't find that application in the manual, but Email me if you want to know how it's done). This tool is incredibly accurate. I put it to a tough test immediately. I made the back of a sofa that consisted of a rectangle, with the 4 corners consisting of pieces cut and dowelled at 45 degrees, and 12 slats between the top and the bottom. Everything had to be perfect to pull this off. To top things off, I was working with a wood that had become slightly twisted, so I was depending on the doweling and clamp-up to pull the twist out.WHAT a job it did--first time I used it. The corners all perfectly matched, the slats all perfectly spaced--so much in fact that had I joined the pieces directly together without the slats, the 12 slat holes were in perfect alignment to one another. And everything was so fast, thanks to the spacer accessory which allows one to set the distance between dowel holes with perfection.I look at my finished product--an entire sofa with over 100 dowels, each having to be exactly in the right place, all of the twists in the wood pulled out. Not a screw in the whole thing. Before, I would have made this using screws and plugs, which would not have been as aesthetically appealing, and would have taken longer. The Dowelmax is really fast using the dowel spacer accessory: you set it once and no need to mark each individual location.I recently used the tool to attach legs to a coffee table. The Dowel-it cannot even attempt this task. With the Dowelmax, 4 legs were glued in place, perfectly, in about 40 minutes. I can't imagine doing this any faster with any other tool. I've used it to make picture and mirror frames, creating perfect 45-degree hidden joints. There's another feature of this tool, seldom mentioned in the literature or in other reviews, that sets it apart. The tool accomodates a 9.7 mm drill bit, which comes with the tool. A 3/8" dowel is 9.52 mm. So, your dowel hole is ever so slightly larger than the dowel. That extra 0.2 mm makes all of the difference. If you have ever used a dowel tool, you will know what I am talking about. When the fit is exact, as with other tools, your glue has no place to go. As you tap in your dowel, the glue gets tapped in, too, filling up the bottom of your dowel hole and ultimately obstructing dowel entry. With the Dowelmax, that extra glue slides up the sides of your dowel, giving complete coverage and a perfect seal. The Dowelmax comes with fluted dowels, meaning the dowels have grooves that run the length of the dowel. The glue squeezes out through these flutes. These dowels are much superior to spiral dowels, where the glue has to navigate a spiral around the dowel--and hardly ever does it very well. Bottom line: dowels go in easy, and you are not stuck tapping madly with a mallet, trying to get your dowel to a sufficient depth while your glue is drying. This speeds up the whole operation, and is a really necessary feature when you are dealing with a long row of dowels and don't have time to mess around. You can get replacement 9.7 mm bits through OMS tool company (maker of Dowelmax), or you can buy them off of [...] in a 3-pack.The tool does require some learning, but either the manual or the CD are perfectly adequate for learning how to use it. Once you grasp the principle, the tool seems almost intuitive. I haven't used the manual now in over a year. The Dowelmax comes with a host of accessories that allow you to put dowels in places that are unimaginable with a self-centering jig. Incredibly flexible tool.BIG question: is it worth the money? I can only tell you my opinion, based on my experience. It is one of the most-used tools I have. Absolutely essential for chairs, and have used it for numerous applications, including putting legs on tables and joining complicated pattern pieces on tabletops. It easily replaces a pocket joiner and a biscuit joiner, and simply cannot be beat for speed or precision. If you have been mortizing and tennoning, chances are you can get an equally secure joint much faster using this tool and multiple rows of dowels, in a lot less time. You may be looking at the piece and thinking why you should pay so much for what seems to be a tiny, non-motorized tool. The answer of me is simply in what it does. It may not have a motor, but functionally, it does things that could only be done by a multiplicity of motorized tools, results in better finished pieces, and saves a lot of time.I suggest also that you buy the expansible fluted dowels that come with the jig, which are also available on [...] through OMS Tool company (the maker of the jig) or through other outlets like Woodworker's Supply or Rocklers. They go in snugly but without force, and expand into the dowel hole, locking in quickly. After one minute, there's no removing them--though with good clamps, you can still squeeze your pieces together. A cheap glue bottle with an application tip for dowels is also a real time-saver. Together with the expansible dowels, you can achieve secure joints by applying glue only to the hole; no need for additional application to the expansible dowel. To sum up: Doweling is a precision operation, very intolerant of error. The Dowelmax is the only tool up to the job, in my opinion, and its flexibility to handle many doweling operations is unsurpassed. If you are like me, you will find yourself using this tool all of the time. It will greatly expand your woodworking capabilities, creates more aesthetically pleasing pieces, and saves a bundle of time. I wouldn't do woodworking without it now. It's definitely a "must-have".

5So far so good...no so far, excellent
By Bob Feeser
I just received the Dowelmax today. I watch the included 45 minute video and that made the concept easy. Then I went into the shop and tried to create my first dowel joint. I marked both outer surfaces with a check mark and put an X on the face where the two pieces meet. What I had a hard time accepting is that I had to reference the one piece off of one side of the jig, then reference the mating piece off of the other end of the jig. I couldn't believe that both ends could be engineered and made so perfectly that both ends would have the same exact registration, but it does. This tool is made on a CNC machine to an accuracy to within 1/1000th of an inch. At first I used the same end on both pieces but that creates an off center fit, then when I finally accepted that both ends are EXACTLY made the same, I did the proper method and reversed the other piece to the other end, it came out perfect. There is something in the mechanics of creating dowel joints that forces the use of opposite ends. Something to do with making dowel holes on two different planes of the wood. One on the tip and the other along the side.I popped for the extra money for the Dowelmax because I am into precision. I calibrate my Incra table saw fence with a dial caliper and the fence maintains the one thousandth of an inch accuracy along the entire length. I use a Bosch digital protractor to measure angles and that is accurate to a tenth of a degree on the digital readout. Why am I telling you all of this? Because the Dowelmax is one super accurate piece of equipment. At first I was hesitant to spend the money, considering the cheap alternatives. Now I think the Dowelmax is worth twice what they charge for it. It is perfectly accurate. The joined pieces come together 100% accurately. When you run your fingers over the seam, you think you are feeling one piece of wood along every plane and surface. There is not even one thousandth of an inch misalignment. The crazy thing is that it takes less than the three minutes the manufacturer states to make a joint. I spend at least 15 minutes to make mortise and tenon joints, and every step of the way, which is about ten steps, requires 100 percent accuracy or the pieces won't align perfectly. The Dowelmax does it in a flash.Because the Dowelmax has multiple dowel guides and so close together, you can place quite a few of these in a small area and in whatever configuration or spacing you choose, you can create an incredibly powerful joint.Something noteworthy is that wood expands and contracts across its width, and hardly changes at all along its length. This is a problem when making real wide tenons. So much so that a tenon of 5 or 6 inches should be segmented into several smaller tenons to prevent joint failure. That is a lot of work to make both the tenons and the mortises. The Dowelmax handles this problem beautifully. The dowels are only 3/8" apiece, and the drill guides are closely spaced. With the totally accurate spacer guide that drops into one of the already drilled dowel holes, then references off of the side of the Dowelmax, gives you the ability to create an unlimited number of dowels, in whatever configuration or size work piece you may need. Another great method built into the Dowelmax system that achieves the same thing is the included reference pin. You can drill several holes, remove the jig, move it over, and use the full size (3/8") pin by sliding it down through the jig and into the freshly drilled hole, and that creates prefect spacing once again for any additional holes you want to drill through the jig. This tool is really well thought out and engineered. It's a shame you can't get a hold of the video that comes with it, if you saw how this system works, you would beg, borrow, and steal to get one. I highly recommend the Dowelmax. I know I will be using this frequently, even though I have a Freud biscuit joiner, Delta tenoning jigs, Kregs complete pocket hole system, and a Powermatic hollow chisel mortiser. You can't beat this Dowelmax system for ease of use, speed, strength, accuracy, and totally precise joints. Combine this system with urethane glues and you have a joint that is so strong that under pressure the wood would probably fail before the joint. Buy it you won't be sorry.

I just received my Dowelmax a few weeks ago, and cannot recommend it highly enough. I have undertaken a large project, which comprises making a built-in cabinet and bookshelf system in one room of our home.I am not an experienced woodworker, so I have learned and experimented with different methods of joinery, including using biscuits, during this project. Even though I had inconsistent results with the biscuit, it did work pretty well. However, the Dowelmax has been much, much easier and quicker to use and significantly more accurate. The resulting joints are dead-on accurate, strong and almost seamless. The product came with a very helpful "how to/instructional" video, and the product is absolutely engineer to the highest standards. Nevertheless, it is also very, very easy to set-up and use, and can be quickly mastered. The system can also be used in many different configurations, and includes helpful accessories, like a indexing pin and distance gauge, that both work very well in the system.I would also recommend that you purchase the 1/4" conversion kit to allow the system to install the 1/4" inch dowels for smaller applications.I really cannot say enough about this product. It is a jig that is actually very helpful, saves tons of time, and operates perfectly. I know it is more expensive than other options on the market, but I feel that the quality and accuracy quickly justifies the price.

5TV, Computer Monitor, Video Game Center
By Chris
This television is the best you can buy for the price ($1169 at Circuit City on sale) - I'll break it down by its possible uses:Television:With an analog television signal, the picture is mediocre - but that's true of most LCDs (and with how bad analog signals are getting, that might be true of all TVs these days). With an HDTV signal, the picture is crisp, clean, and static graphics don't waver like on most LCD televisions in this price range. Fast moving action doesn't blur or pixelate at all.DVD playback:When hooked up with component or S-video cables, DVDs are about as good as you'd get with a regular television. There may be some pixelation on static graphics and default color settings may not be to your liking, but playing with the settings will fix that for standard viewers. Using a DVI cable hook-up, you'll get an amazing picture that almost makes the cost of DVI cables worth it. The default widescreen picture may look pinched between two large black bars, but changing the picture settings will allow you to eliminate the typical widescreen black bars without sacrificing the edges of the picture.Computer monitor:*Note this television was hooked up to a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 Ultra graphics card*This is an excellent computer monitor, but ONLY if you use a DVI cable (this will keep you from hooking up a DVD or cable box with a DVI cable). Using an S-video cable to hook this television up to a computer will probably leave you with a massive case of eye strain because text will be blurry and the S-video option doesn't allow you to alter the setting very much. With a DVI hook up, this television can act as an excellent (and huge) computer monitor. With some programs such as video games, you may need to alter the in-game resolution to make it fit with the monitor resolution (tested with World of Warcraft), otherwise the game action will look blurry. Again, changing the setting will fix this problem for most peoples' tastes. You can have your computer running with the television picture-in-picture or side-by-side (or vice versa), allowing you to work and watch television or a DVD (S-video connection only). As for points of criticism, this television only has 1 S-video connection, 2 component video connections, and 1 DVI connection. The S-video connection does not face downward like the other connections do so pressing this unit back against a wall isn't possible if you're planning on using an S-video connection. The remote is serviceable, but the picture-in-picture channel must be changed via the remote by going through the on screen menu. The picture-in-picture cannot be swapped without going through the menu as well. The sound is face-forward only, but with a standard surround hook up you won't feel like the TV is projecting sound straight at you. With any LCD TV, you may find one or two dead pixels (visible on dark backgrounds), so you may want to check the picture before hooking everything up just in case. For the money and the size, this television can't be beat. I compared this TV to a 20" Sharp Aquos LCD and this Samsung actually came out on top in practically every category, including price. If you're looking for a great LCD television that can also be used as a computer monitor, this is the way to go.

4Excellent TV for use with component input
By Kram Niawt
To clarify the title a bit, it's not that there's anything wrong with the TV without component inputs, just that it doesn't take real advantage of the Tv's strengths if you don't at least hook up your DVD player to it. :-)My setup is relatively minimal: it's hooked up with my DVD player and to satellite TV (with antenna broadcast stations). I haven't hooked this up to any external speakers, and much of my TV viewing isn't HD.Anyway, the picture is excellent, especially if you have a progressive scan DVD player and/or an HD receiver (obviously). The blacks aren't the blackest of the blacks, but the TV does have a few preset color and brightness settings, and offers a custom setting to the user. There's a fair amount of customization available to the user for the picture and sound, including fine tuning analog signals. My parents have a rear projection TV that isn't so great with NTSC (analog) signals, but this thing doesn't show the pixellated effect to anywhere near the degree that their TV does. The DNIe algorithm does a good job with boosting color and contrast too, and there's a nifty demo mode that does a split screen of DNIe on one side and no added effect on the other on top of the current signal. DNIe and some of the preset color settings do exaggerate colors a bit, but not to the point of a major color shift. If you're a purist with regard to color, you would want to leave DNIe off, set any presets to "Standard" or "Movie." It has two zoom modes for those rare occasions when you want to clip off the top and bottom of a 4:3 signal. The second zoom seems to strech things vertically I guess to fill the screen from wider cinema formats. (I never use it.) The sidebars when in 4:3 mode are black, but screen burn-in isn't a real issue with an LCD.The sound from the internal speakers is good for what you get in one package, and while I'm generally skeptical of these whiz-bang features like WOW stereo (or DNIe above), it works well with the internal speakers at least. It's probably superfluous if you have a surround or better quality external speakers, but for me, it does somehow make ambient audio sound deeper and more peripheral. For example, sounds that happen offscreen sounds like they coming from way off to the right or left at a proper distance. The design of the TV itself is nice, though some might not like the black border around the picture. Viewing at angles is not an issue at all -- the picture is great at pretty much any angle, and the frame doesn't block out the picture. The case is a lot of plastic painted a good metallic silver, with a heavy base (not too heavy -- the whole thing wieghs about 24 lbs.), and has a good level of fit and finish. It's not to the level of an Apple computer, but it's as good as the Sony and Philips I looked at.Samsing makes a pretty big deal about using it as a PC monitor in tandem, with picture in picture (PIP), and a button in an important spot on the remote.Setup is pretty easy. Cables in the back face down, but it's easy to remove the cover there and get them in place. There are a few extra outputs that are exposed on the back for quick access. Configuring the TV options is easy, and the menu system is clear. It has a quick setup mode when you first turn it on, and it's easy to find that option again later in the menus. Menus are big and easy to read with a semi-transparent background so you can see the effects on the picture behind. The reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 is because of the average remote. It has all the stuff you need on it, obviously, and some nice and accessible options are on it like the picture mode, the picture size, the audio mode, component switching, etc. It has a covered panel that slides down to access some. It isn't really a complete universal remote, and I think Samsung expects users to buy a real one to replace the included one. The finish, the buttons, and the contours of the remote are OK, but not designed to the same level as the TV proper.Did I miss anything? Probably, but overall it's a very good TV. I use mine in my living room, though I'm guessing a lot of people will use it in a den or bedroom because of the size. I sit about 6-8 feet from it and it looks and sounds great.FYI: Be sure to let your DVD player know you're using a widescreen TV, or else it will stretch the picture in widescreen mode and still leave bars at the top and bottom. It took me a few minutes to figure that out.

4Update: I wish I could change my rating
By Coop
I first saw this TV in Circuit City. The picture on it was as good or better than all the other flat-panels on display. I was ready to plop my money down right there when the salesman told me that it couldn't be wall mounted. My heart sank (who would make a flat panel that can't be wall mounted?). I went home and within a minute on the internet I found the wall mount for sale at J&R Music World. So don't let the uninformed folks at Cicuit City burst your bubble. Soon thereafter I found the TV on the internet at a substantial discount to the CC price. It promptly arrived about 3 weeks ago. The wall mount was easy to install, and I ran the wires into the wall behind it. Now my TV rests securely yet stately on the living room wall. On to performace...Not only does the picture meet or beat any other flat-panel I've seen, it even beats my friends top of the line Samsung DLP HDTV. No real problems with fast moving action, and the blacks are black (some lCD's can only produce a dark gray). I currently use an LG Over-The-Air HD tuner, and the HD picture is fantastic using either the component or DVI connection. However, right now OTA HD content is limited to special events (monday night football for example) and primetime television. The regular analog signal is actually a little better picture than the non-HD digital picutre (confused yet?). So I leave it on analog unless true HD content is being broadcast. Now my biggest problem with this tv, and what keeps it from earning 5 stars, is the lack of quality audio when using the DVI source. In order to get audio with the DVI, I had to run regular RCA audio cables from the tuner to the tv, then use a PC stereo adapter (combines the two cables into one input), therefore the audio only plays out of one speaker. The TV has a digital video input, but no digital audio input! Now there are RCA audio inputs on the tv, but they only work when the Component source is selected. So I'm going to have to go back to using Component cables just so I can get sound out of both speakers on the TV.I suspect they will come out with a model that has the newest HDCP(?) input that combines digital audio and video in one cable. If Samsung could just do that one simple thing, then this tv warrants 5 solid stars.UPDATE: TV broke one year and six months after purchase. It is no longer under warranty. I'd change my rating to a 1 star if I could. I expect my electronics to last more than a year and a half. I'll see if someone can fix it...

4Why are you only marketing to girls???????
By WKC
This is a very nice introductory weaving set. I did a small amount of weaving when I was younger, and this is a very nice set for children. I bought this for my 7 year old SON, who is very artistic and he is having great fun with it. My 9 year old is also very interested in it, so I am going to get another kit. But BEWARE!!! If you are buying this. The box only has girls on it!!!! I almost sent it back for fear that it would turn my boys off with the message that this is only for girls. Luckily, my sons don't pay a lot of attention to this, but ALEX should be more careful about the messages they are sending. Weaving is a great hobby for girls AND boys. Some of the greatest weavers in history have been men and in some native cultures, only men were allowed to weave. Weaving is a great and relaxing hobby that both girls and boys should be encouraged to enjoy. If not for the marketing issues, I would have given this item 5 stars.

5Wonderful first loom
By dephal
My daughter received this loom as a gift for her 6th birthday. Even though the box says for ages 7 and up, and even though she's not the most nimble-fingered kid, she has no trouble using this loom with just a little help. The materials seem to be high quality and it comes with a good amount of thick, colorful yarn. The loom has been keeping my daughter happily occupied for long periods of time. She enjoys watching me knit, but doesn't have the dexterity yet to knit herself, so she's thrilled to be able to weave herself scarves and the like.

5Great loom, easy to use!
By Learning All The Time
I've used other looms with pegs at both ends to wrap the yarn around, and those frequently snapped off. So I really like how the base of this loom is one solid piece of wood with notches instead of pegs. Both my 2nd grade son and 1st grade daughter used this loom to supplement their study of ancient Greek/Roman cultures, and were quite pleased with the placemats they made. My son wanted to know why weaving was considered work since it was so much fun! While they have set this loom aside now that spring is here, I think they will still voluntarily choose to use it in the weeks to come. And if not, it still has a lot of potential for rainy/sick days and for making special gifts for doting relatives.

5Excellent Purchase!!!!
By L. Burt
I bought this desk for my daughter's fifth birthday. Her Christmas toys are already forgotten, but this art desk is used every day. The desk and chair are designed to be compact, and they fit easily in a bedroom or family room. It is more visually appealing than the art desks that are bulky and made of plastic. The top of the desk is very spacious and provides plenty of elbow room. (Two children can even use it at the same time.) I debated buying an easel, but this desk can be adjusted into different positions to resemble an easel, and the surface of the table becomes a chalkboard. If you lay the desk flat, you also have an ideal surface for working puzzles or working a child's laptop computer. Assembly is fairly easy. Just be sure to use a drill, instead of the provided wrench to cut your time in half. If you are frustrated at spending money on toys that never get played with...this is an awesome purchase!!!!!

We bought this for our 2 1/2 year old and she loves it, she even convinces her 8 year old sister to play with her on it. The chalk board is great quality. She even likes to eat her meals there because it's the perfect size for her. Thanks so much!

4Great design, HIDEOUS colors
By R. Neil
With all due respect to the other reviewers, the person who said this desk wasn't garish doesn't know what that word means. This is the epitome of everything I hate design-wise about kid's furniture. It looks like it would be perfectly at home at Bozo T. Clown's house. It is bad enough that it is BRIGHT red, yellow, AND blue (who decided those colors go together anyway?) but it also has bright yellow stars highlighting the otherwise cute cut-outs. But if it's at all possible to look beyond the blinding ugliness of it all, the design features are great. Love the chalkboard surface (the reviewers who said it didn't work may have ignored the instructions to "cure" the surface first?), and the paper roll and dispenser are genius. It's a good height for my petite two year old but large enough that it looks like there's plenty of room to grow. I am honestly considering sanding the whole thing down and letting my toddler splatter the paints of her choice all over it. At least then it would be artsy. In the meantime, I'll suck it up for her sake, and hope someone at the company reads this and considers the fact that parents will have this in their home.

5BEST DVD PLAYER / RECEIVER I HAVE EVER OWNED!
By Santiago Ruiz
This thing is amazing. It's a DVD player as well as a surround sound receiver of the highest quality. It sounds and works better than many receivers that don't have the DVD player built in. It's a sophisticated home theater system in one solid box. Fully recommend it!

5Great Quality and a Great Deal!
By scherf.com
I had this DVD player for quite some time now and initially I was a bit suspicious because of the low price. But I'm very happy with this Pioneer DVD/CD player -- it functions perfectly and it does virtually everything I need it for. I just bought this DVD player because my $600+ Sony DVD player which was a few years old had something with the sound quality and I wanted to see if an inexpensive DVD player from a popular consumer brand like Pioneer would do the job, and I'm to say it does and it's even a lot better than my Sony which I've given to my kids for their small TVs.As we watch DVDs several times a week and a lot on the weekends, this DVD player has proven to be a workhorse. If it would break I would definitely buy the same one right away.

5A good one-trick-pony
By TD Rebel
It does what it says it does; I've tested it with a European DVD (from Germany). It apparently has an (undocumented) PAL ~> NTSC converter, but perhaps the presence of this feature is assumed (what would be the use of a DVD player that reads a Region 2 DVD but doesn't convert it from PAL to NTSC?).Its picture quality is close to my much more expensive Pioneer DVR-520H (multi-region playback is the one thing the DVR doesn't do), the main difference being in a particular anomaly which makes a person's face distort when the person moves; it looks as though you are watching the person's face through an opaque window (like through the opaque glass of a bath shower door); as the face moves, parts of it get bigger and then smaller as if the glass has different thicknesses throughout. This type of distortion is more pronounced on this unit but it is also noticable on my DVR.The only differences in playback functionality, compared to my DVR, are pretty minor, such as how you go about doing frame-by-frame playback. The DVR has a separate set of buttons for this function while on this unit you must first press Pause and then FF or Rewind (big deal!). Also, the DVR has sound in its slowest FF mode while on this unit there is no sound and its slowest speed is much faster than on the DVR. Again, big deal.On the other hand, there are also minor advantages on this unit; both units have 4 FF and Rewind speeds but unlike on the DVR, if you keep pressing FF (or Rewind) past speed #4, this unit cycles back to #1 (the DVR just stays on #4). Very minor differences both positive and negative. The only other thing worth mentioning is that this unit has fewer video setup options; it just has basic contrast, color saturation, etc.If you're on a budget or simply need a one-trick-pony (multi-region) DVD player, this is a good choice.[...]

5Excellent sound quality for the money...
By Eduardo Nietzsche
I came across this DVD player while auditioning a friend's speakers. In his den, he had a one thousand dollar obscure-audiophile-brand CD player and a Sony 300CD carousel player, there was a huge improvement in sound with the audiophile CD player. In his media room he had this Pioneer and I found the sound quality to be fairly close to the audiophile CD player...we tested them side by side!So for those of you who plan on using your DVD player that can deliver excellent musical performance, this would be a solid choice among the mass market stuff. For movies it's no slouch either.
