4good performer, but
By Quick Smart
I agree with the wheel gripes. The wheels are injection molded with a very thin plastic, one of mine had a slash in it and collapsed on first use.So, I went up to farm and fleet and bought two new wheels with steel center and solid rubber, heavy tread, put them on and it is perfectly mobile over any terrain, now.I also agree Makita fudges on the specs. Most important though is the performance in use, and there, it shines. I've used similar double tank units from other manufacturers and much prefer the design of this unit. It stores connectors and a hose, handle breaks down for storage/transport, It is made very well and is quiet for a unit this size.It does draw power on the initial kick on, as they all do. I'd hoped to run this on my Yamaha 2500 watt generator, which is equivelant to a 20 amp circuit, but no go. It blows the breaker everytime. And the Yamaha runs a portable DeWalt table saw, jet 1200cfm dust collector and a chop saw just fine (not all at the same time!)So, while it is not perfect, it is a good performer and I'm very satisfied with the comressor at the cost.

4Item is not 1720 RPM as described
By Shop Foreman
Amazon's description describes this as running at 1720 RPM which is equal to Makita's MAC2400 product which runs at half this one's speed (and is quieter as a result).NOTE THIS ITEM RUNS AT 3420 RPM AND HAS A SLIGHTLY LARGER BORE THAN THE MAC2400 - SO EXPECT IT TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY LOUDER.

2Makita Products & ESP. Service Down the Tubes
By Fit'n Fifty
I purchased this tool in June, 2008. It arrived from Amazon in perfect condition. After the initial 'break-in' period I used it a few times for minor chores around the shop. No problems. The problems began when I took it outside. For a machine this heavy it has lousy plastic wheels which not only bent out of shape, the axle they ride on also bent. I am not abusive with my tools and take reasonable care when handling them. Also, one of the plastic gauge covers cracked. In addition, the plastic shroud that goes over the compressor rattles like crazy and probably makes twice as much noise as this machine needs to make. Simply an observation of mine of poor design. But the real problem was the way in which Makita service treats you when you need help. The parts to replace were simple to swap out, and relatively inexpensive. The service rep I spoke with wanted me to drive this compressor 60 miles each way to have an authorized service center look at them to determine whether they "really failed" or not. In the past if I had a problem with heavy equipment that was easily repaired at my end the parts would be shipped free of charge, assuming the item was under warranty (it is). The rep further argued with me that the wheels simply "wore out" from usage. I explained to him I hadn't used this tool for more than a total of 20 hours and that that was an unreasonable assumption regarding the wheels. His next argument was that "Makita only warrants the motor on these tools and the rest is up to me - at my expense, to have repaired." Unbelievable. The warranty clearly states the entire tool is warranted for one year. Makita's have always made good tools in the past, but I would strongly recommend you look elsewhere if considering this tool, or any other from Makita. Their service center is abysmal. I can understand them not having the sharpest tacks handling the phone calls. But at least know your products and their respective warranties. No more Makita tools in this shop. This was a poor choice on my part.

5Best in class
By Michael D. Brill
I think it's the best for the following:A) This compressor just purrs. People are amazed when it's running. Big rubber feet also help prevent transmitting vibration to whatever it's sitting on, so no more vibrating boards.B) Over-built compressor compared to tank size - so cycle times are very short - if using light-duty tools, it doesn't run much anyway. Also runs way more cool than others - I'll save those sear lines for my steak on the grill - not my forearm.C) No leaks - holds its air pressure seemingly forever when turned off (not that you shouldn't release pressure when done using it).D) The air filter is a miniature version of an old-time car air filter. For a unit that's going to be sitting on the ground amidst swirling construction dust, this is a big plus.E) It does indeed weigh in, but at least the design is very compact. The frame wraps around and protects most of the important stuff, so there are no lines, wires, etc. waiting to be snagged. The glaring exception is the air filter hanging off the side - I can see this part's going to be replaced at some point when I throw it in a truck bed. No problem for shop use though.Be forwarned - Makita's packaging designers always seem to get it 90% right. In this case, the air filter is just thrown in loose inside the box - mine broke one of the gauge glasses. If pressed, their warrantee dept. will send out small parts, but it's a PITA to get a product this good only to have to fix it right out of the box. Also - pay attention to the "break-in" procedure - run it for @30 minutes with no load, open petcock, to seat the rings.

5The other Reviews are Correct, this is a great compressor
By P. Rudy
I do not want to repeat what all the other reviews have said. This is a quality compressor. In this day and age of plastic junk, I am surprised some of the reviews complained about wieght. The weight comes from steel, not plastic parts. The tanks are heavy steel as is the roll cage around the entire mechanism. The handle is in the center, so carrying it is well balanced. The compressor is just as quiet as others report. I have it in the corner of my workshop about 10 from me. The start up instructions are easy and you are up and running in 20 minutes. Why did I get this compressor? In sum, (1) I wanted a GOOD quality tool that was not Chineese junk, (2) I wanted at least 4 cfm for tools and (2) I did not want to spend a fortune. There seems to be several classes or levels of compressor in the lower price range. Unless you are getting a specialized mini-compressor just for a small brad gun, the $125-175 compressors are mostly junk: loud and rough. This Makita is in the next step up, with compressors in the $225 to 325 range. There are some Dewalt Emglo and others I looked at in this range. Most of this second tier are either made for just for job sites or are just bigger cheaply made compressors.I chose the Makita over the Dewalt for one reason: quiet. The Dewalt is an excellent compressor, but you cannot use it next to you in an exclosed shop -- its too loud. So, I wanted a quality tool and one that could live in the shop next to me. The Makita does both in spades. It is a very well made little compressor. The fit and finish is great. It has a dual personality: it works and looks great in the corner of the shop AND is perfect for taking to a job site or the back yard. Best of both worlds. The compressor seems to live up to its specs. I have easily run 3/8 and 1/2 inch impact wrenches, a brad gun and a finish nail gun, along with blow guns, etc. When I went to use a Snap-On 7200 3/8" air ratchet, the performance was just adequate. Then I read the spec for the ratchet and it calls for 4.5 cfm. The Makita is rated at 4.2. SO, you do have to watch the cfm ratings on tools: I am sure a 8 cfm jitterbug sander will not work. But then again, that is not the type of tool I wanted this for.I have not owned a compressor is many years. I looked long and hard for the best of all worlds: quality, size, price, and cfm. As an advanced and serious home workshop dude, this review is not written for the pros. But for a serious homeowner that appreciates quality tools and needs a general purpose compressor, I believe I found the perfect compressor.Lastly, no shop came close to Amazon on total price, in large part due to the free shipping.

5Perfect compressor - quiet & powerful
By Home improvement enthusiast
I needed a compressor to put up a fence, install mouldings and refinish my basement. After a TON of research, I settled on this Makita. I am very pleased. It's quiet, very well built and easy to use. So far I've run a framing nailer and brad nailer with no problems.I've read other reviews that speak to the weight of this unit. Well, it's a compressor and they ARE heavy. That's just how it is. Especially a high-quality compressor like this one. It's not a tinny piece of junk and there's only plastic on it where it makes total sense - no where else. Makita also puts a NICE molded rubber handle on it that doesn't shift or move one bit. The thing's built like a tank and looks great. I have yet to trip a 15-Amp breaker with it.Additional comments:The finned discharge tubing on this thing is fantastic - if you've never had your hand seared like a steak after touching discharge tubing on a compressor, you haven't truly felt pain. I've brushed the tubing with the motor running on this one (accidentaly) and where my hand normally would have STUCK, it was only warm. Very nice touch. The tanks fill quickly enough, and the gauges are really nice quality. The pressure regulator is pretty easy to adjust once you get the hang of it.Again, the noise level is excellent. I can use the compressor in my basement shop and can barely hear it running on the main level. I can have a pretty much normal conversation with it running 10 feet away in the same room.If you're looking for a high-quality, oil-lube (don't know why anyone would go for a non-oil unit) compressor that will last for years, look no further.

5A Drill Bit's Best Friend
By D. Metcalf
I purchased a Drill Doctor drill bit sharpener a couple of years ago, and I've been really impressed with this machine. I don't do alot of drilling, but I do enough to wear down a few drill bits and even snap a few. I did have one of those crappy drill powered bit sharpeners, but unless a bit wasn't cutting at all I wouldn't dare put it on that thing - it would dull more than sharpen most of the time.I know that a sharper cutting tool works faster, cuts cleaner, and is all around a safer tool to work with. Drill bits are no different. I saw this unit at the local home improvement store, and decided to take a gamble since I had never heard of Drill Doctor before. The drill doctor is so easy to work with. My unit came with a detailed video that quickly showed me all there was to operating this simple machine. Pop the bit in the special chuck, align & adjustment is easy & virtually automatic. Then turn the unit on and turn the chuck in the sharpening hole. Literally in a couple of minutes I had sharpened my first bit. Next challenge was to see what it would do with a broken off bit. I selected a 1/8" bit broken at a steep angle. I had to run it through for a few minutes, readjust the chuck a few times after I'd ground it down some and it wouldn't cut anymore, but in the end I recovered a bit that was completely useless. In my shop it will be a little while before this unit pays for itself in bit replacements, but I think it's already paid for itself in precision drilling and avoided frustration! One note, if I were getting a Drill Doctor today I would probably look at the DD500 or DD750 units. They can sharpen bits at 135º in addition to the 118º standard cut, but you can sharpen any bit to the 118º angle without problem.

5Skeptical at first
By J. Loging
I work at Sears selling tools and with all the gimicy tools that are out there, I was skeptical of the Drill Doctor, until I tried it. It takes about 30 minutes to really get the hang of it, but after that, it is wonderful.I was drilling through ratchet handles to make a display. I had taken a brand new cobalt bit off the shelf and dulled it after 2 1/2 ratchet handles. I pulled out the Drill Doctor as a joke. But the joke was on me. After about 5 minutes of figuring out how it works, I was able to finish the next three ratchet handles after sharpening the bit.I have done tool demonstrations at Sears with the Drill Doctor. I have taken drill bits, ground them down on a grinder so they wouldn't drill into Jello, then sharpen them and go through 1/8 steel without a problem. I must have sharpened nearly a thousand drill bits at Sears and the unit is still working. The price is a little steep, but you won't need to buy drill bits again.

4Paid for itself
By J. A. Clarke Beattie
Not as easy to use or as quick as I had hoped but still well worth the money if you drill lots of holes! It is a pleasure to sharpen a drill just before using on a jobsite and getting a first class hole drilled in quick time. We keep this on the jobsite every day.

5Best thing since sliced bread
By David J. Mathews
The Zircon CF 12 PRO saves hours of hunting for the correct breaker to shut off a circuit. Instead of the old fashioned trial and error approach, you merely attach the transmitter to the circuit to be worked on, then take the 'sniffer' (receiver) to the circuit breaker panel. By running the 'sniffer' over all the breakers twice (the first time to calibrate the unit, the second time to locate the circuit you are connected to) you locate the correct breaker in less than a minute. Shut off the breaker, go back to the sender, and confirm the light is off. You are ready to rock and roll. The unit comes with connectors that can be used with clips, standard 120V plugs, blades for larger or unusual plugs, and a light socket adapter. Also, all this comes in a durable, lockable plastic box with a well designed foam insert that keeeps all the parts protected, yet readily accessible. What more could you ask for? Time is money, and this unit will pay for itself after the first couple of times you use it. Don't leave the shop without it!

5Works Great
By SilverSurfer
I had a 10 or 15 year-old breaker finder from Radio Shack which would always identify several breakers as "the one". This Zircon unit works perfectly, always identifying just 1 breaker, and it's the correct one.Make sure you understand and follow the directions. The signal from one wire will be coupled to nearby wires. This can't be avoided. The reason you have to run the detector past all the circuit breakers once is to let it identify the strongest signal. On this first pass it may light up on more than one breaker. But on the 2nd pass, it'll only indicate the breaker with the strongest signal, which is the one you're looking for. It's also important that you orient the detector as shown in the instructions.

4Very easy to use
By Bill
Product worked well for us. We have a complicated office with four sub-panels, some 220V, and wires running all over everywhere with little apparent pattern. We were able to figure out where almost everything went, with a few exceptions. And because it works on live circuits we didn't need to turn breakers on and off.The unit is very easy to use because it automatically adjusts for signal strength. Run it past each breaker twice and it reliably identifies the one that's connected to the probe at the other end.We did run into a problem with the unit -- it died after one week. We called the company, which repaired it and shipped in back in working condition promptly and without complaint.

4What wasn't in the manual....
By Anthony Hermans
I just received the compressor and it's the first one that I've owned. The shroud was cracked upon receipt, but I don't think it's worth the trouble to have that piece replaced. Now that I've gotten everything figured out, I think it'll work fine, but the manual is a complete disaster. Some important setup instructions are completely omitted and others are so obtuse as to be worthless. If you don't know your way around compressors, the following steps that I took may prove useful:1. Remove the plastic plug on the back of the compressor and pour in the included oil until the level is about half way up the little transparent indicator window.2. Replace the disposable oil plug with the long black plastic one that they include (not in the instructions -- the piece is item number 36 on the parts diagram)3. Remove the other disposable plastic plug from the side of the compressor (high up and toward the back of the shroud. This is where you need to install the air filter (also not in the instructions.) The air filter assembly is item number 35 on the parts diagram -- it's the other spare part included that's chrome and about the size of a hockey puck with a wing nut holding it together.4. You'll screw in the air filter assembly where you removed that plastic plug, but I'd suggest that you use some teflon tape on the threads to make a good seal.5. The instructions mention that you're to open the air receiver's drain valve for initial start up. Nowhere in any diagram is any part labeled as such, but I'm pretty sure it's item number 47, a valve on the side of the compressor very near the bottom.Hopefully this'll save someone some time!

5Great little compressor
By R. Koch
I have had this compressor for a couple of weeks now and really like it. It is a high quality unit clearly built to last. I chose this model over the very popular oil-free pancake compressors mainly for it's compact size and low noise level....and it did not dissappoint me. I would say this unit is half as loud as those typical oil-fee models by P*rter C*ble. I can easly run it indoors while remodeling a bedroom, and hardly hear in the room next door.

The unit is compact, but much heavier duty than similar Cr*ftman compressors I saw at Sears. It recycles quickly and fills the tank in less than 20 seconds. It came with a good owner's manual and a bottle of oil. I did have a problem where the plastic oil filler cap was cracked, but Makita quickly sent me a replacement part under warantee. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an occasional use compressor and does not want something large or loud.

5Compact and well made!
By A. Dufault
I purchased this unit to replace an oil-less pancake compressor that burned out. The Makita MAC700 is super! It has all the attributes of a large high quality oil-lube compressor. I am very pleased to report that the unit is as quiet as advertised. By comparison, the pancake compressor this unit replaced was DREADFULLY loud. I am impressed with the powerful low-rpm motor and the heavy duty oil-lube design. In my opinion, the longevity and quietness that an oil-lube compressor offers, far outweighs the time and slight inconvenience of routine maintenance. At this time, I cannot suggest any improvements to this machine. I love it! If you are looking for a light duty air compressor, I highly recommend the MAC700 Hot Dog Air Compressor. It's great for finish nailers, car and bicycle tires, and kids' toys. A great addition to any home garage!

5great clamps

Had to buy 2 of these when book case I was building was "redesigned" lol.The clamps are excellent and very strong, also very heavy and a lil difficult for 1 person to handle. Am very concerned tho of the price increase in less than 6 months, from $49.00 to $69.00 each, even faster than gas prices..........

5THE GREATEST CLAMPS ON EARTH !
By New Yankee
This review was originally written back in May 2006 and deleted by Amazon in December 2006, so we will see how long this will last.Bought two of the 98 inch K-bodies back in March 2006 over the phone from Toolcrib / Amazon and was told they had plenty in stock, they arrived three months later, finally. I wasn't worried about them flexing for the length they are, anybody that has ever clamped with Bessey K-bodies knows, not a problem, five stars for Bessey, one star for shipping. Here's the story, I received two 82 inch K-bodies instead in March 2006, must of been a mis-pick from the warehouse, that happens, bad packaging, should not happen. One was shipped in a flimsy what looks like a cereal box wrapped on one of them, broken red end inside. The other one was packed in bubble wrap, single layered, torn opened and a broken red end, missing the black plastic ends. Called customer service to have them reorder the 98's, was told when they receive more in that I would be placed on the top of the order list, NOT! I received two 98's six weeks later in worst shape then the 82's, could not even use them being damaged on the inside clamping surfaces. Reordered online this time so I could change my shipping to two day and hope that would help, not even close, damaged on one of the handles, missing parts again. Finally was able to change out the OK parts with the broken ones before I sent the second two back to get two good clamps that will work. Tools are now shipping through Amazon warehouses, not Toolcribs, so do not expect too much. When Amazon mentioned free shipping, they forgot to mention the bad packaging job that was included. The price on these were $49 dollars each with a free 24 inch K-body when you buy two, which arrived in excellent shape, wrapped in bubble packing in a oversize box.

3Amazon's shipping is PATHETIC
By George
I rated it all .. the product and how I received it and the customer service. I ordered the 98 inch clamp. Well, I ordered 2 of them with the free 24 incher. The 98's shipped separately, one by UPS and the other by FedEx home delivery. Seems wasteful, shipping them separate like that, but Amazon made up for it with the packaging. Again. I am getting sick of Amazon's packaging, and am close to finding someone else to make my purchases from.We got home on Friday night, and there was my clamp! Resting against the house in all it's glory! For all to see. I thought they came in boxes? Oh it did ... it came in 4 boxes ... well, really 4 pieces of boxes. Three of the box pieces weren't attached to anything. And one of them contained the mailing label! There was a small piece of box (3 feet) around the middle of the clamp --- that'll protect it some! At least UPS deleivered all the box pieces. And of course the clamp was damaged. The top and the bottom were damaged ... as to be expected, after all, the box pieces were just lying loose. Oh, and the packing slip was loose too, guess that makes 5 pieces that were shipped. After the challenges with getting a dust collector hose reshipped for being packed like a sardine and the replacement coming in an OPEN box with no packing material left, I had no doubt that a replacement clamp would fare no better. Off to the phone to complain again. Sigh. Spent 30 minutes on the phone explaining to the gal about how Amazon needs to pack the products better, and went through the recent history of packages that I received. I explained my dissatisfaction and recommended that even though they would send out replacement parts, it is still wasteful. I guess what Amazon saves on packing material and TAPE is more than they spend on sending out replacement parts. She said to box it up and send it back. DUH .... there is NO box to box it up with! I have 4 pieces of box. After further discussion, she put me on hold, then it was decided that if I wanted to keep the damaged clamp they would e-mail me a promotional certificate to use with my next order. I could live with that.3 days later, and no email. Grrrr ... I called them back. There was no record of my earlier discussion with Amazon. No feedback, no promotional certificate mentioned, etc. Double GRRRR. I guess Amazon really doesn't want to fix their packaging problem. However, Amazon did offer to send me out a replacement email, which I received while still on the phone. The person on the phone assured me that Amazon would fix the shipping problems immediately ... yea, right -- I was just born yesterday. At least MOST of the time Amazon's customer service is good. I guess this lady just figured she'd blow me off and leave it to me to call back. Amazon should fire her on the spot (if they could find her) .. but since there were no records of my conversation with her, I guess they will not find her.The second clamp arrived Saturday, buy Fed Ex. This one surrived the trip. The 3rd one is in the mail. So, rating 2 clamps, the shipping, the packaging, the customer servive averages to a 2. But I love Bessey clamps, so I will rate the experience a 3.

4No More Cut Cords!
By Len
I agree with what was said in the earlier review. My own comparison is with the 10 year old B&D 22" electric that it replaced. I was impressed in that it gives up nothing in terms of power. I used it today for the first time on my 150' of hedges and lots of other bushes, especially hugh forsythias. It did all the trimming with no sign at all of battery fatigue. It's much smoother in operation than the old one. There are two things I didn't like about it. The forward handle is made so that it's only comfortable to hold at the top and not at the sides as in the old models. Also, as was said, there's not a lock-on switch. You have to hold the switch on. They did that, no doubt, for safety reasons, but that's probably where the fatigue enters. Many folks will rig up a clip to achieve the same thing.

4Good trimmer
By dan moses
Black and Decker has a few cordless hedge trimmers so I was a bit confused which to try. This was their latest model and boasted a 40 minute run time so I decided to go for it.The product worked great. I charged the battery the full 6 hours required when you first get it. What's nice about it is after the initial charge the full charge time is 3-6 hours, but the unit can left charging indefinitely without damaging the unit. The unit performed admirably. It cut beautifully and the charge lasted the 40 minutes. The Hedge Hog breezed thru my bushes with ease. If I have two criticisms, they are 1) you have to keep your hand squeezed on the handle while using it - not a big deal cuz your hand is there anyway, and 2) (and more importantly) the unit isn't light. After about fifteen minutes or so, my arms got a bit fatiuged.Still, the criticisms are minor, and I'd highly recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't want to deal with the gas or electric powered models.

1Be wary of reviews by people that just purchased this item!
By S. Moulton
I have had this unit for almost a full year. I have used it about 12 times now. The first time was good; neat not having a cord. The second time alright. The third time the battery petered out after 15 minutes. As it is now, the battery doesn't hold a charge just sitting on the shelf even though you might have charged it fully before putting it away. I just went to use it one last time... it lasted all of 5 minutes. Who wants to sit around waiting for 3 hours for a battery to charge and then bam!, get right to work before it loses any power... and I have tried that too... it konks out after about 20 minutes on a "full charge" now and the last ten minutes of that is not very powerful. I'm am totally disgusted with product, and that is why I marched right into the house to write this review.
