Digital Circuitry, Quad Analog Channel Modulator - The Channel Plus 5445 Is Still Better Than Most

I've had my Channel Plus 5545 in service for 4-years now. I live in a deep fringe "Over-The-Air" area with severe local electrical pollution and have a security camera system. Solutions for decent channel distribution in my home were few. Channel Plus had what I needed to get digital Off-Air and to have four added channels of my own choosing. The difference in my 5545 and this 5445 is my 5545 has added IR capability - 4 emitter ports on the back panel. Everything else is the same. The 5445 is also drift free and stable (frequency agile and reliable), like the 5545, and gives Blonder Tongue modulator models a run for the money.***NOTE***You may want to check which model you order as they are selling at the same price level. The 5445 and the 5545 are the same - except the CHANNEL PLUS 5545 Quad Channel A/V Modulator with I/R Output (CHANNEL PLUS 5545) has IR emitter ports added. Those emitter ports just might be something you want - especially if you want to hide the modulator with several other pieces of equipment like a DVD, satellite receiver, etc.It wasn't just a simple addition of the 5545 for me though. I had to install a stacked array of Winegard high gain highly directional UHF antennas with proper cable termination lengths before I could get reliable digital channels of sufficient strength over the air in the UHF band. The UHF antennas were the 9095P, and I had to use a high gain low noise Channel Master CM-7775 to keep signal levels high over the UHF cable run for just one TV. Since I had one UHF station 3-miles away in one direction and the majority over 40-miles in other directions in the distance, I had to install a Winegard channel filter to lower the output from the close by station. I also had to install a VHF only high gain highly directional Winegard antenna and a Winegard AP 3770 "VHF only" low noise pre-amp. With this in place, I finally had perfect reception at one TV.The security system, a DVD/VCR recorder player, and two digital satellite systems also needed to be added - and the Channel Plus 5545 took care of adding them to analog channels 56, 58, 62, and 64 (added channels must be separated by one channel from others, and shouldn't be shared with off-air channels broadcast on or directly adjacent channels to selected modulated channel outputs on the 5545 or 5445). If you do place a modulated channel on an analog channel used to broadcast off-air digital channel/s, you will lose the digital channels broadcast from the analog channel. Now, this is a lot of reception source equipment, and I was able to put it all away in a closet with the 5545 modulator - and happily out of sight using a Channel Plus 2100A wall plate, a Xantech 291 IR receiver, and IR emitters added to the 5545 modulator. This is the main reason the Channel Plus 5545 is so well liked by owners - you can use IR targets to control everything from each room. The emitters just can't be plugged into a 5445, so a wall adapter like the 2100A or 2010 is needed to expand IR function when using a 5445. The Channel Plus 5545 or 5445 are also equally at home with CATV systems.Now, as I said, this is everything set up for proper reception in ONE ROOM. To add the TVs in the rest of my home, and continue having great reception with no loss from connecting all of them, I used the Channel Plus DA-550HHR - and powered it using the coax from the 5545 modulator. This gave great signals throughout my entire home to each TV set. Using added 2100A IR wall plates and Xantech 291 IR receivers, I can also control everything using the IR emitters on the 5545 modulator.The 5445 and 5545 modulators provide identical boost to modulated channels. But, the DA-550HHR outputs 3.5 dB from each coax output, and allows for proper insertion of my off-air antenna system.The Channel Plus 5445 and 5545 have few drawbacks other than the lack of IR function on the 5445, but they do have some. The modulated channels can appear grainy or have interference patterns if they are too near a strong analog off-air or CATV channel. The grainy appearance shows up a bit worse using an HD TV set - very similar to tuning in an old analog off-air channel or viewing old analog movies over a digital channel. There is no upscaling of the signal. Even grainy, the channels are superior to clear but old school analog off-air channels. The 5445 and 5545 would be about perfect if they created digital channels instead of analog.Sound using the 5445 is decent and identical to the performance of the 5545, but it isn't stereo despite the need for connecting both right and left channels of the audio source - it requires both as it combines them to a mono audio signal. If you only connect one to one input, sound volume will be reduced. To prevent this, you can use a splitter to input a single audio output to both of the audio inputs per 5445 (or 5545) modulated channel. Channel Plus once produced a decoder that could be used to convert the mono output back to stereo, but it's no longer offered. If you want stereo now, you have to purchase the Channel Plus SVM-24 modulator. While the SVM-24 reproduces full MTX, and offers Dolby, video is S-video. In other words - no HDMI or High-Def beyond 480i will be output from the SVM-24.For the price, the Channel Plus 5445 or 5545 are a good solution for adding up to four channels to a coaxial viewing system - excellent for security system cameras. While I would like to have better picture definition, I can't complain about the Channel Plus 5445 modulator or my 5545. It has been a rock solid system that runs 24/7 and has proven itself to be totally reliable.*Note* Be sure to protect your coax system with blocking capacitors where needed (where IR wallplates aren't used), and to use coax surge arrestors on off-air antennas connected to the coax system. I also use a blocking capacitor at each coaxial connected end-component served by my coax distribution system. My distribution system has never given a problem - and the 5545 is the heart of it.Should you need to have only one modulated channel added, there is the 5415HD that does up to 720P with full stereo. This unit outputs using true digital channels - perfect for HD TVs.

4 Input Modulator Works Beautifully

If you have four video sources such as satellite television receivers or any four devices that can output composite video, this wonderful little 4 input modulator converts your four separate signals beautifully and simultaneously into either cable channels above 65 or UHF channels in the lower range of channel numbers. I use it with satellite television receivers. If I'm recording what I'm watching, I switch over to cable TV and see what somebody else is watching. This device allows the older televisions in my house to do picture in picture the same way a cheaper RF modulator would, but there's more versatility with a modulator that can output four signals at once. Whatever your application for this device is, I'm confident you will be satisfied.

Setup the modulator. Plugged in my video sources. Programmed the video sources to deliver video on the required channels.Sweet it worked out of the box.Note. If you are using this with Cable broadcast or other broadcast you will likely need the appropriate notch filter appropriate to the channels you want to distribute the video on.I required the following notch filter for my Charter Cable install: - ChannelPlus NF-471 (CATV Channels 75-80)
