5Amazing for the price and size
By Eduardo Nietzsche
...especially if you're in a smallish room, say 10x14 or so. Hsu has a host of bigger and more powerful models at their website (hsuresearch dot com) for bigger bass appetites and bigger rooms. As an internet-direct manufacturer they and SVS offer amazing bang for the buck, positively annihilating the store-bought brands like Klipsch, Polk, Infinity, Sony (gag!) and Bose (gag! choke! cough!). And with their liberal return policies you have nothing to lose really.I borrowed a friend's (next model up) STF-2 for several days and was very impressed, and that's with a 6000 cubic foot room with 20 foot cathedral ceilings! Just amazing value and quality.

5Probably exceeds the hype.

I've had my Hsu STF-1 for six months now, and I use it daily. I purchased it directly from Hsuresearch.com. Before this, I had a Sony SA-W2500(basically, a sloppy, weak powered woofer). Realistically, this is my first subwoofer. A "true" subwoofer, as the company calls it. I listen mostly to music, but also movies/TV. It has given me the stereo I've always dreamed of, and my main speakers aren't even expensive! Everything from classical/rock/jazz, to throbbing dance music just comes alive in 3-d effect with this thing. Even standing near it, all your attention just goes right to the speakers, which now just seem to pop.One of the reasons the STF-1 makes everything sound so alive is because it gets out of the way of the main speakers with a sharper cutoff at the top end. It's the higher end mid bass that subs often produce which muddies up the mid range. Let your main speakers handle that stuff! This sub plays clean, tight, low and loud! The only downside is it's a bit big and heavy for an 8" sub, but then it's also built like a tank. Try rapping the top or side and find out why these Hsu subs are always being compared to way more expensive options. I have mine on a Sub Dude subwoofer platform on a wood floor in a master bedroom. The sound is so clean and pure I never get tired of listening to it! I only wish I had bought a Hsu years ago. *** By the way, the Hsu website clarifies the correct pronunciation of the name HSU: Sounds like "Shoe" as opposed to "Sue" which most of us tend to say...Thanks for reading.

5I do NOW own one and read reviews for hours

From what I gathered after intensive (obsessive) research - there are five good makers of subwoofers. Hsu and SVS are the most highly recommended under $1000, but there are other good ones. The STF-1 is the Hsu Research lowest priced sub and is superb. The STF-2 is even more highly recommended (goes lower but is bigger). Both were more than I thought I needed. I bought a Velodyne CHT-8 (one of the other of the five good subwoofer makers) cause I didn't need "perfection" and wanted to save some money. A year later I sold the Velodyne (not a bad subwoofer) and bought this (a very good one at a good price). ecousticsdotcom is a good place to read up on subs and to search easily for professional and user reviews. Also here at this site.
